Carpenter vs. Construction Worker: What Are the Differences?

Learn about the two careers and review some of the similarities and differences between them.

A carpenter and a construction worker are both tradespeople who work in the construction industry. Though they share some similarities, there are several key differences between them. In this article, we discuss the differences between a carpenter and a construction worker, and we provide additional construction-related professions you may be interested in pursuing.

What is a Carpenter?

Carpenters are skilled tradespeople who create and repair wooden structures and fixtures. They use a variety of hand tools and power tools to cut, shape and assemble wood into products such as frames, cabinets, doors, shelves and more. Carpenters also install drywall, insulation, flooring and other finishes. They may also be responsible for repairing and maintaining existing structures. Carpenters typically work in construction, but they may also work in other industries such as manufacturing, shipbuilding and furniture making.

What is a Construction Worker?

Construction Workers are responsible for physically constructing buildings, roads and other structures. They use a variety of tools and machines to complete their tasks, such as jackhammers, bulldozers, cranes and tractors. Construction Workers must be able to follow instructions from their supervisors and work well as part of a team. They must also be physically fit and able to lift heavy objects. Construction Workers typically work full-time hours and may be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays depending on the project deadlines.

Carpenter vs. Construction Worker

Here are the main differences between a carpenter and a construction worker.

Job Duties

Carpenters and construction workers share some job duties, like using tools to build structures. However, carpenters have additional duties related to their specialty. For example, a carpenter might measure and mark wood before a construction crew installs it. They also may be responsible for designing and building specific elements of a structure, such as installing cabinets or building staircases.

Construction workers often perform general labor tasks, like operating machinery or hauling materials. They may also assist other workers on a site, like carpenters or other tradespeople. Construction workers may help carpenters by transporting materials or providing safety training.

Job Requirements

Carpenters typically need to complete an apprenticeship program that lasts three to four years. During their apprenticeship, carpenters learn carpentry skills through on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Some carpenters also choose to earn a bachelor’s degree in construction management or a related field.

Construction workers typically do not need any formal education beyond a high school diploma. However, some employers may prefer candidates who have completed a vocational program or an associate degree in construction technology or a related field. Construction workers can also pursue certification through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). This organization offers more than 70 different craft-level training programs that teach construction workers how to safely perform their job duties.

Work Environment

Construction workers typically work outdoors, often in extreme weather conditions. They may spend their days on construction sites and travel to different locations for work. Carpenters usually work indoors, but they may also work outside when building structures like decks or porches. Some carpenters may have a workshop where they can build projects off-site and transport them to the final location.

Skills

Both carpenters and construction workers use problem-solving skills to figure out the best way to complete a task. For example, if they encounter an issue with the materials they are working with or the design of the project, they need to be able to quickly find a solution that will not cause delays.

Carpenters and construction workers also both need physical strength and stamina as they often spend long hours on their feet and performing manual labor. They also need to have good hand-eye coordination to avoid accidents.

Carpenters tend to use more specialized skills than construction workers as their job involves working with wood to create or repair structures. This may include skills such as measuring, cutting and shaping wood. They also need to be able to read blueprints and follow instructions. Construction workers typically do not use as many specialized skills as their job duties are more varied. They may operate heavy machinery, mix concrete, lay bricks or perform other tasks as needed.

Salary

The average salary for a carpenter is $52,807 per year, while the average salary for a construction worker is $43,895 per year. Both of these salaries can vary depending on the type of work you’re doing, your location and your experience level.
