ComEd is one of the largest electric utilities in the United States, providing service to more than 3.8 million customers in northern Illinois. ComEd’s mission is to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to their customers.

If you’re applying for a job at ComEd, you can expect to be asked a variety of questions about your qualifications, work history, and availability. In this guide, we’ve assembled a list of ComEd interview questions and answers to help you prepare for your interview.

ComEd Interview Process

The interview process at ComEd can vary depending on the position you are applying for. However, most positions will require at least a phone interview and an in-person interview. For some positions, you may also be required to take an assessment test. The interviews are typically behavioral based, and ComEd uses the STAR method to assess candidates. Overall, the interview process is long and tedious, but as long as you are prepared it should not be an issue.

1. How would you handle an irate customer?

Customer service is an important part of any job, and the interviewer may ask this question to see how you would handle a challenging situation. Use your answer to highlight your problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.

Example: “I have experience working with customers who are upset or frustrated about their power outage. I always try to listen to what they’re saying and empathize with them. If there’s something I can do to help, I’ll offer it. For example, if they lost power for several days during a recent storm, I might offer them a small discount on their next bill. This helps ease some of their frustration while also helping me show my customer service skills.”

2. What is your experience with customer service?

Customer service is an important part of working for ComEd. The company wants employees who can provide excellent customer service to their customers and other stakeholders. When answering this question, it’s important to highlight your interpersonal skills and ability to solve problems.

Example: “I have worked in customer service for the past five years. I started as a call center representative but quickly moved up to become a supervisor. In my role, I helped train new representatives on how to handle calls from customers. I also handled escalated calls and complaints. My team consistently had the lowest number of complaints out of all the teams in our department.”

3. Why do you want to work at ComEd?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your interest in their company. They want to know what attracted you to the role and whether you have done any research on the organization. Before your interview, read through the job description to see if there are any specific skills or qualifications they’re looking for. If so, make sure you highlight these in your answer.

Example: “I am very passionate about renewable energy, and I think ComEd is a great place to work because of its commitment to clean energy. I also love working with people, and I think that as an employee of ComEd, I can help educate others about renewable energy sources. In my last position, I was able to do just that, and it made me feel good knowing that I helped someone understand how solar power works.”

4. Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult situation and how did you handle it.

This question is a great way to assess your problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure. When answering this question, it can be helpful to think of a time when you had to solve a challenging issue or problem that involved multiple steps.

Example: “When I was working as an IT specialist for a large corporation, there was a power outage in the building where I worked. The outage occurred during my lunch break, so I wasn’t able to fix the issue right away. However, I knew that if I didn’t get the power back on soon, some employees would have to leave early because they couldn’t use their computers. 5. Do you have any experience working in the energy industry?

Employers ask this question to see if you have any experience working in the energy industry. They want to know that you are familiar with their company and its culture. If you do not have any experience, you can talk about your interest in the energy industry.

Example: “I am a huge fan of renewable energy sources. I would love to work for ComEd because it is one of the leading companies in the renewable energy sector. I think it’s important to invest in renewable energy because it helps reduce our carbon footprint. I also believe that we should be using more sustainable forms of energy instead of relying on fossil fuels.”

6. Describe a time where you went above and beyond for a customer.

This question is a great way to show your dedication and willingness to help others. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention how you helped the customer and what their reaction was.

Example: “When I worked at my previous job, we had a customer who called in because they were having issues with their electricity. They said that when they turned on their lights, the microwave would turn on as well. We sent an electrician out right away, and he discovered that there was a short in the wiring of the light switch. He fixed the issue by replacing the switch and testing everything before leaving.”

7. What are some of your strengths and weaknesses?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your personality and how you view yourself. They want to know that you are honest, but also confident in your abilities. When answering this question, be sure to highlight a few of your strongest skills while being humble.

Example: “I am very organized and detail-oriented. I can usually anticipate what needs to get done and complete it before anyone asks. My weakness is that sometimes I work too hard and don’t take enough time for myself. This means that I often forget to eat or rest when there’s work to do. I’m working on making sure I take breaks throughout the day so I can stay focused.”

8. What would you do if two coworkers were arguing, how would you resolve it?

ComEd wants to know how you would handle conflict in the workplace. This question can help an interviewer determine your problem-solving skills and ability to work with others. Use examples from past experiences where you helped resolve a conflict between coworkers or other employees.

Example: “In my last position, two of my coworkers were arguing about who was responsible for entering data into our system. One coworker thought the other should have done it, while the other coworker insisted that they had already entered the data. I stepped in and explained that both of them needed to enter the data together so there wouldn’t be any mistakes. They agreed and worked together to complete their task.”

9. Do you have any experience with data analysis?

ComEd is a large utility company that needs employees who can analyze data to make important decisions. Your answer should show the interviewer you have experience with this skill and how it has helped you in your career. If you don’t have any direct experience, you can talk about what led you to develop these skills.

Example: “I’ve worked as an IT professional for several years now, so I’m very familiar with analyzing data. In my current role, I regularly monitor our servers to ensure they’re running smoothly. When there are issues, I use my data analysis skills to determine the cause of the problem and find solutions. This helps me resolve problems quickly and efficiently.”

10. If hired, what would be your approach to analyzing our current systems?

This question is an opportunity to show your analytical skills and how you would apply them to a new role. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention specific systems or processes that you would analyze in order to improve them.

Example: “I would start by analyzing the current customer service system. I would look at the number of calls we receive each day, as well as the average length of those calls. From there, I would determine if customers are calling for general information or if they have more complex questions. If many customers are asking complex questions, then I would work with our team to create training materials so that our call center representatives can answer these questions more efficiently.”

11. Give an example of a time when you had to solve a problem that was not straightforward. How did you approach the problem?

This question is an opportunity to show your problem-solving skills. It can be a great way to highlight how you use critical thinking and analytical skills to solve problems.

Example: “When I was working as a customer service representative, there were times when customers would call in with questions about their bill or the services they had. Sometimes, it could be difficult to understand what they were saying because of background noise or accents. In those situations, I would ask them to repeat themselves multiple times until I understood what they were asking for. Then, I would explain my understanding of their question so that we both knew exactly what I was talking about.”

12. Are you comfortable working outside on utility poles during inclement weather?

The interviewer may ask this question to assess your willingness to work in potentially dangerous conditions. Your answer should show that you are willing to do what’s necessary to complete the job safely and efficiently, even if it means working outside during bad weather.

Example: “I am comfortable working on utility poles during inclement weather because I understand the importance of getting the job done as quickly as possible. However, I always make sure to take all safety precautions when working outside, including wearing appropriate clothing and equipment for the weather and checking the condition of the pole before beginning any repairs.”

13. Do you have any experience working with electrical equipment?

This question is an opportunity to show your knowledge of electrical equipment and how you use it. You can answer this question by describing a time when you used electrical equipment in your previous job or experience with electrical equipment.

Example: “I have worked with electrical equipment for the past five years, starting as an apprentice electrician. I learned about different types of electrical equipment and how to safely work with them. In my last position, I was responsible for installing new electrical equipment in homes and businesses. I also had to repair damaged electrical equipment.”

14. Tell me about a time where you worked as part of a team to achieve something.

ComEd is a large company that works as part of a team to achieve its goals. The interviewer wants to know how you work with others and what your experience has been like working in teams. Use this question to highlight your communication skills, teamwork abilities and problem-solving skills.

Example: “In my last position, I worked on a project where we had to come up with new ideas for marketing campaigns. My team and I decided to meet once a week to discuss our progress and brainstorm ideas. We also used an online collaboration tool so everyone could see the different ideas we were coming up with. After about two months, we came up with some great ideas that helped us reach our goal.”

15. What is your favorite aspect of engineering?

This question can help the interviewer get to know you as a person and how your personality fits with the role. Your answer should show that you enjoy engineering, but it can also be an opportunity to share what you are most passionate about in this field.

Example: “My favorite aspect of engineering is problem-solving. I love finding solutions to complex problems and figuring out new ways to make things work better. In my last position, we were tasked with creating a more efficient way to transport materials from one part of the plant to another. We came up with several ideas for improving our current system, including using conveyor belts and automated trucks. After testing each idea, we found that the conveyor belt was the best option.”

16. Have you ever managed or led a team before?

This question can help the interviewer determine your leadership skills and how you might fit into their company culture. If you have experience leading a team, describe what motivated them to work hard or achieve goals. If you don’t have direct management experience, you can still discuss any leadership roles you’ve held in the past.

Example: “I’ve led teams of volunteers at my church for several years now. I started out as a volunteer youth leader but was promoted to lead the entire youth ministry after two years. In this role, I had to delegate tasks to other leaders and make sure everyone was on track with their responsibilities. This helped me learn how to manage a large group of people while also helping others develop their own leadership skills.”

17. Tell us why you think you would be a good fit for this position.

Employers ask this question to see if you have done your research on the company and its culture. They want to know that you are genuinely interested in working for them, not just looking for a job. When answering this question, make sure to highlight some of the aspects of ComEd that interest you.

Example: “I think I would be a great fit for this position because I am passionate about renewable energy. In my last role, I worked with a team of engineers to create new solar panels that were more efficient than ever before. I love being able to use my skills to help people save money while also helping the environment.”

18. Tell us about your previous experience working in the energy industry.

Employers ask this question to learn more about your background and experience. They want to know if you have any unique skills or knowledge that can help them with their business. When answering, try to focus on the most relevant information. If you don’t have much experience in the energy industry, talk about a time when you worked in another field that is related.

Example: “I’ve been working as an electrician for five years now. I started out doing small jobs like installing light fixtures and repairing outlets. Eventually, I got my contractor’s license and began working on larger projects. For example, I recently installed solar panels at a local school.”

19. What do you think are the most important qualities for someone who works for ComEd?

This question can help the interviewer determine if you share their values and opinions about what’s important in a job. When answering, it can be helpful to mention qualities that are listed in the job description or that you’ve seen demonstrated by employees of ComEd.

Example: “I think one of the most important qualities for someone who works at ComEd is being able to work well with others. I know from my research that your company has many departments, so I understand how important it is to have team members who communicate effectively and support each other. Another quality I think is important is having integrity. I noticed that ComEd has an ethics hotline where employees can report any concerns they have about unethical behavior. This shows me that the company takes ethical behavior seriously.”

20. Can you tell me about a time when you were working on a team project and there was conflict, how did you handle it?

ComEd is a large company that often has many employees working on the same projects. The interviewer wants to know how you will handle conflict with your coworkers and whether or not you can work well in teams. Use examples from previous jobs where you had to resolve conflicts with team members, clients or supervisors.

Example: “In my last job as an IT specialist, I worked with several other technicians who were all tasked with fixing different computer issues for our department. One day, one of my colleagues was having trouble fixing a problem with a coworker’s computer. Instead of trying to fix it himself, he asked me for help. I explained what I would do to troubleshoot the issue and fixed it within five minutes. He thanked me for helping him and we both got back to work.”
