An electrical superintendent is responsible for managing the installation and maintenance of electrical systems in a commercial or industrial setting. This job requires a high level of technical knowledge as well as strong management and communication skills.

Are you familiar with the National Electrical Code?

In your answer, explain how you use the NEC on a daily basis.

Example: “Yes, I am very familiar with the NEC. As an electrical engineer, I have been using the NEC for years. It’s one of the first things I look at when starting a new project. The NEC has helped me understand what safety precautions I need to take during my projects.”

What are some of the most important skills for an electrical superintendent to have?

This question can help the interviewer determine if you have the skills and abilities to be successful in this role. When answering, it can be helpful to mention a few of your strongest skills and how they relate to the job.

Example: “I believe that communication and problem-solving skills are two of the most important skills for an electrical superintendent to have. As an electrical superintendent, I would need to communicate with many different people on a daily basis. This includes communicating with other members of my team, construction workers and clients. It also means being able to solve problems quickly so that construction projects stay on schedule.”

How would you handle a situation where one of your team members was not following safety protocols?

An interviewer may ask this question to assess your leadership skills and how you apply them in the workplace. In your answer, try to show that you value safety and are willing to hold your team members accountable for their actions.

Example: “I would first meet with the employee one-on-one to discuss why they were not following protocol. I would explain what the consequences of their actions could be if something went wrong on a job site. If the situation happened again, I would take disciplinary action such as suspending or firing the employee depending on the severity of the infraction.”

What is your process for planning out and executing electrical projects?

The interviewer may ask you this question to understand how you plan out your projects and the steps you take to ensure they’re completed on time. Use your answer to highlight your project management skills, including your ability to create schedules, delegate tasks and manage budgets.

Example: “I start by meeting with the client to discuss their electrical needs and expectations for the project. I then use my experience to determine a budget for the project and develop a timeline for when each phase of construction should be complete. After that, I assign specific tasks to different members of my team so we can work together to meet our deadlines. Throughout the process, I regularly check in with my team to make sure everyone is on track.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to troubleshoot an electrical issue.

An electrical superintendent needs to be able to identify and solve problems quickly. Employers ask this question to see if you have experience with troubleshooting electrical issues. Use your answer to explain a specific situation where you had to troubleshoot an issue on the job. Explain what steps you took to fix the problem.

Example: “When I was working as an electrical superintendent for a large construction company, we were building a new shopping center. The contractor hired us to install all of the electrical wiring in the entire facility. One day, one of my electricians came to me because he noticed that some of the lights weren’t turning on. We went to check it out, and sure enough, there was a power outage in one section of the store.

I asked him to mark off the area so no one would get hurt. Then, I gathered up two other electricians and we started troubleshooting the issue. After checking all of the breakers, we realized that one of them wasn’t working properly. We replaced it and then tested the rest of the system to make sure everything was working correctly.”

If a project was behind schedule, what strategies would you use to help catch up?

Employers ask this question to see how you handle stressful situations. They want to know that you can stay calm and use your problem-solving skills to get the job done on time. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to help catch up on a project’s timeline. Show them that you are organized and have strong communication skills.

Example: “If a project was behind schedule, I would first meet with my team members to discuss possible solutions. I would then create a plan of action for each member to follow so we could complete our tasks in a timely manner. If there were any issues along the way, I would make sure to communicate those to my team as well. This helps everyone understand what is going on and keeps us all informed.”

What would you do if you noticed one of your team members was arguing frequently?

This question can help interviewers understand how you manage your team and the relationships you have with them. Use examples from past experience to explain what you did to resolve the conflict or encourage a more positive relationship between the two employees.

Example: “In my last role, I noticed one of my electrical engineers was having frequent arguments with another engineer on our team. How well do you think you can adapt to the needs of different clients?

Example: “I have experience working with a variety of clients in my previous role as an electrical superintendent. For example, I worked on a project for a client who wanted us to use environmentally friendly materials when building their new facility. In another instance, I worked with a client who was very particular about how they wanted their facilities to look. They would send me pictures of what they liked and disliked so that we could ensure our designs matched their expectations.”

Do you have experience working with hazardous materials?

When planning out electrical projects, do you take into account the needs of the surrounding area?

Example: “I always take into account the needs of the surrounding area when planning out my projects. For example, I recently worked on a project where we needed to install new power lines in order to provide more electricity to a building. However, there was no room for us to expand the substation, so instead we installed the new lines underground. This allowed us to avoid disrupting traffic while still providing enough electricity.”

We want to be able to quickly adapt to the changing needs of our clients. How would you help us do this?

This question can help the interviewer understand how you would fit into their company culture and adapt to changes in the industry. Use examples from your previous experience that show you’re flexible, open-minded and willing to learn new things.

Example: “I’ve worked for several different companies throughout my career, so I know firsthand how important it is to be able to adapt to change. In every position I’ve held, I’ve always been eager to learn more about the electrical industry and how we can improve our services. For example, when I was working as an electrical engineer, I noticed a lot of clients were asking us to install solar panels on their homes. So, I took some online courses to learn more about solar energy and how to integrate it into our work.”

Describe your process for documenting completed projects.

The interviewer may ask you this question to gain insight into your organizational skills and attention to detail. Your answer should include a specific example of how you documented a project in the past, along with details about what information you recorded and how you organized it.

Example: “I use an online document management system that allows me to create folders for each client I work with. Within these folders, I can upload documents like invoices, receipts and photos of completed projects. This helps me stay organized and ensures I don’t lose important documentation when working on multiple projects at once.”

What makes you stand out from other electrical superintendents?

Employers ask this question to learn more about your qualifications and how you compare to other candidates. When answering, it can be helpful to highlight a skill or experience that makes you unique from the rest of the field. You may also want to mention something that is important to you as an electrical superintendent.

Example: “I think what makes me stand out from other electrical superintendents is my ability to work well with others. I have always been someone who values teamwork and collaboration. In my last role, I was able to help resolve many conflicts between coworkers by listening to both sides and coming up with solutions together. This helped create a better working environment for everyone.”

Which electrical systems are you most familiar with?

This question can help the interviewer determine your experience level and how much you know about their electrical system. It’s important to be honest when answering this question, but it can also be helpful to mention a few systems that are similar to theirs so they can see that you’re familiar with other types of electrical systems.

Example: “I’m most experienced in working with high-voltage power lines, as I’ve worked on several projects involving these systems. However, I have also worked with low-voltage power lines, which is what your facility uses. I am confident that I could learn any new systems quickly if needed.”

What do you think is the most important aspect of safety when it comes to electrical work?

The interviewer may ask this question to see how you prioritize safety in your work. Electrical superintendents need to be aware of the risks involved with electrical work and take steps to mitigate them. In your answer, explain what you think is most important about ensuring a safe workplace for yourself and others.

Example: “Safety is definitely one of the most important aspects of my job as an electrical superintendent. I always make sure that all of my employees are following proper safety procedures when they’re working on projects. For myself, I try to use common sense when it comes to avoiding accidents. If something seems unsafe or if I’m not sure how to do something safely, I’ll consult someone who knows more than me.”

How often do you perform routine maintenance on your equipment?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your attention to detail and how you care for the tools of your trade. Your answer should include a specific example of when you performed routine maintenance on equipment and what steps you took to ensure it was in good working order.

Example: “I perform routine maintenance checks at least once per month, usually before I start any new projects or assignments. During these monthly checks, I always make sure that all my tools are in top condition and ready to use. If there is anything wrong with them, I take the time to fix them so they’re ready to go by the next time I need them. This helps me avoid wasting time looking for tools during an assignment.”

There is a bug in your electrical software that is causing incorrect estimates. What is your process for handling this situation?

An interviewer may ask this question to understand how you handle challenges in the workplace. Your answer should show that you can troubleshoot problems and solve them quickly. You can also mention any specific software or programs you use for electrical work.

Example: “I would first try to figure out what caused the bug. If I could fix it myself, I would do so immediately. However, if I needed help from a programmer, I would contact my supervisor right away. They would then decide whether we need to hire someone to fix the problem or wait until our next budget cycle to get it fixed.”
