Are you comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather?

Example: “I am very comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather. I’ve worked as a logger for five years now, so I’m used to working outside in all kinds of weather. I know how to dress appropriately for any type of weather. I also understand that safety comes first when working outside. If it’s raining or snowing, I’ll take extra precautions to ensure my safety.”

What are some of the most important skills for a forestry worker to have?

Employers ask this question to make sure you have the skills they are looking for in a forestry worker. They also want to know if you understand what is important about these skills and how they can help you succeed in the role. When answering this question, think of some of the most important skills that you possess. You can also mention any skills that you would like to develop or improve upon.

Example: “I believe communication skills and problem-solving skills are two of the most important skills for a forestry worker to have. Communication skills allow me to work with my team members and other professionals on the job site. I can share information with them and ask questions when needed. Problem-solving skills allow me to find solutions to problems quickly so I can get back to work as soon as possible.”

How would you deal with a conflict with a coworker?

Employers ask this question to make sure you have the ability to work well with others. They want a team that can communicate effectively and resolve conflicts quickly. In your answer, show that you are willing to talk things out with coworkers and find solutions together. Explain that you would try to be respectful of everyone’s opinions while also being firm about what you believe is best.

Example: “I think it’s important to always treat my coworkers with respect. If I had a conflict with one of them, I would first try to speak with them in private. I would explain how their behavior made me feel and ask if they could change their actions or words. If they refused, I would take time to reflect on the situation and decide whether I wanted to report them to management.”

What is your experience with using hand and power tools?

Employers ask this question to learn about your experience with tools that are commonly used in forestry work. They want to know if you have the skills and knowledge to use these tools safely and effectively on the job. When answering, list two or three of the most common hand and power tools you’ve worked with before. Explain what each tool does and how you use it.

Example: “I am very comfortable using both hand and power tools. In my last position, I regularly used a chainsaw, bow saw, pruning shears, loppers, an axe and a brush cutter. I also used a variety of different sized wrenches and screwdrivers for repairs and maintenance.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer or client.

Employers ask this question to see how you handle conflict. They want to know that you can remain calm and professional in challenging situations. In your answer, try to focus on the steps you took to resolve the situation.

Example: “In my previous position as a forestry worker, I had a client who was unhappy with our work. He called me directly to complain about some of the services we provided. Instead of getting defensive, I listened to his concerns and asked him what he would like to see changed. We scheduled a meeting so I could show him exactly where we were planting trees and discuss any other issues he may have had. After seeing the progress we made, he apologized for being upset and gave us another contract.”

If hired, what would be your long-term goals as a forestry worker?

It can also be beneficial to mention any certifications you hope to earn during that time period.

Example: “My long-term goal is to become a forester. I have already started taking classes toward my certification, and I hope to finish those by the end of next year. In addition to earning my certification, I would like to continue working as a forestry worker for at least another five years. Eventually, I would like to work as a lead forester.”

What would you do if you noticed a problem with a tree that you were responsible for caring for?

Employers ask this question to make sure you have the skills and knowledge necessary to identify problems with trees and take action. In your answer, explain what steps you would take to address the issue. Try to be as specific as possible about how you would handle the situation.

Example: “If I noticed a problem with a tree that I was caring for, I would first inspect it thoroughly to determine the extent of the damage. If there were any safety concerns, I would report them immediately so they could be addressed. Next, I would assess whether the tree needed professional care or if I could treat it myself. If I determined that I could treat the tree myself, I would do so using my training and resources. If not, I would contact my supervisor or another qualified individual to get advice on how to proceed.”

How well do you communicate with animals?

Working in forestry often involves working with animals, such as birds and squirrels. Employers ask this question to make sure you can communicate effectively with these types of wildlife. In your answer, explain that you have experience interacting with animals. Explain how you would use your communication skills to keep the animals safe while also completing your work tasks.

Example: “I’ve worked with many different types of wildlife throughout my career. I know how to interact with them so they feel comfortable around me. For example, when I’m planting trees, I always speak softly to the animals so they don’t run away from me. This helps me avoid scaring them or causing any harm to them. I also use hand gestures to show them that I mean no harm.”

Do you have experience using tree climbing equipment?

Employers may ask this question to learn more about your experience with the tools and equipment you’ll use on the job. If you have experience using tree climbing equipment, share what kind of equipment you’ve used in the past and how comfortable you are using it. If you don’t have experience using tree climbing equipment, explain that you’re willing to learn how to use it.

Example: “I’ve used a harness system for tree climbing before, but I’m not as experienced with aerial lifts or bucket trucks. However, I am eager to learn these skills if hired for this position.”

When is it appropriate to use fire to manage forests?

This question can help interviewers assess your knowledge of the industry and how you apply it to your work. Use examples from your experience that show you understand when fire is a useful tool in forestry management.

Example: “Fire is an important part of forest management because it helps clear out dead wood, which allows new growth to flourish. However, I only use fire as a management tool if there are no other options available. For example, I worked on a project where we had to burn down a large area of land due to invasive species taking over. We used controlled burns to remove the invasive plants while also allowing native plants to grow back.”

We want to increase the diversity of our forest. How would you encourage more people from different backgrounds to visit or work in our forest?

In your answer, describe a time when you used chain saws or other woodcutting tools. Explain how you used them and what you learned from the experience.

Example: “I’ve worked with chain saws before, but I haven’t had much experience cutting down trees. When I was working as an assistant forester, my supervisor asked me to cut down some small trees on our property. I wasn’t comfortable doing it at first, so he showed me how to do it. He taught me how to hold the chainsaw properly and how to start it up. After practicing for a while, I got more confident in my abilities.”

What makes you stand out from other candidates for this position?

Before your interview, make a list of three things that make you unique as a candidate. These could be skills or experiences that are relevant to the job. Share these with your interviewer so they know what makes you special.

Which types of trees and forests do you have the most experience working with?

This question can help the interviewer determine if your experience aligns with the job description. It also helps them understand what types of trees you’re most comfortable working with and how much experience you have in a variety of conditions. When answering this question, it’s important to be honest about your experience level but also highlight any skills or training that may allow you to work with different types of trees.

Example: “I’ve worked primarily with pine trees for the last five years, however I am confident in my ability to work with other species as well. In my previous role, I was responsible for identifying tree species and determining which ones were healthy enough to harvest. This helped me develop an understanding of many different types of trees and forests.”

What do you think is the most important thing to remember when caring for a forest?

This question is an opportunity to show your knowledge of forestry and the importance of caring for a forest. You can answer this question by giving examples of how you care for forests in your current or past job.

Example: “The most important thing when caring for a forest is making sure that it’s healthy. I think it’s crucial to make sure that all plants are growing properly, there aren’t any invasive species and the soil is fertile. Another important thing is keeping track of what trees are planted where so we don’t accidentally cut down the wrong tree. It’s also important to keep up with maintenance on equipment like chainsaws and other power tools.”

How often should you prune a tree?

This question can help the interviewer determine your knowledge of tree pruning. It’s important to show that you know how often a tree should be pruned and when it needs to be done. You can answer this question by giving an example of how often you’ve pruned trees in the past, or you can give a specific time frame for how often you think trees should be pruned.

There is a disagreement among your team about how to handle a situation. How do you resolve it?

This question can help the interviewer assess your leadership skills and ability to resolve conflict. Your answer should show that you are able to work with others, communicate effectively and solve problems.

Example: “I would first make sure everyone had a chance to speak their minds about the disagreement. Then I would try to understand why each person feels strongly about their position. Once I have all of this information, I would try to find a solution that satisfies everyone’s needs as much as possible. If we still cannot come to an agreement, I would ask my supervisor for advice on how to proceed.”
