As the head bartender, you’re responsible for the bar’s inventory, ordering, and staff. You also create drink menus, train new bartenders, and oversee operations. In short, you’re the boss of the bar.

2. What are some of your favorite drink recipes to make?

Bartenders need to be able to create a variety of drinks for their customers. Employers ask this question to make sure you have the skills necessary to make quality drinks and provide excellent customer service. Before your interview, try making one or two of your favorite drink recipes so that you can show the employer what you are capable of doing.

Example: “I have a few favorite drink recipes that I like to make. One of my favorites is a classic margarita. It’s simple, but it always pleases the customer. I start by combining tequila, lime juice, and triple sec in an ice-filled shaker. Then I shake vigorously until the ingredients are well blended. Finally, I strain the mixture into a salt-rimmed glass filled with fresh ice cubes.

Another one of my go-to drinks is a Manhattan. This cocktail requires more skill than the margarita, but it’s worth the effort. I begin by stirring together rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass. After that, I add a few large ice cubes and stir for about 30 seconds. Finally, I strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

These two cocktails are just a couple of my favorite drinks to make. I’m also experienced in making other popular cocktails such as mojitos, cosmopolitans, and old fashioneds. I’m confident that I can create any type of drink that your customers may request.”

3. How do you stay organized when managing multiple tasks at once?

4. What is your favorite aspect of being a head bartender?

5. Provide an example of a time when you had to resolve a conflict between two customers.

This way, neither one felt like they were being treated unfairly.

The customers agreed with this solution and thanked me for helping them come to a resolution. It was a great feeling knowing that I was able to de-escalate the situation and keep everyone happy. This experience has taught me how important it is to remain calm and professional in any situation.”

6. If a customer orders a drink that you don’t know how to make, how do you handle the situation?

7. What would you do if you noticed one of your bartenders stealing money from the register?

8. How well do you know the state liquor laws?

This has allowed me to stay informed on the latest developments in the industry and ensure that my bar is compliant with all applicable laws. Finally, I make sure to keep an open dialogue with local law enforcement so that I can be aware of any new or changing regulations.”

9. Do you have any experience hosting cocktail competitions?

10. When is the best time to add ice to a drink?

Example: “The best time to add ice to a drink is when the drink is being made. 11. We want to make our bar stand out by offering unique drink recipes. What is a drink recipe that you’ve never seen before?

12. Describe your process for cleaning and organizing the bar at the end of the night.

In addition to my technical skills, I’m also very passionate about providing excellent customer service. I take pride in creating memorable experiences for each guest that visits our establishment. I’m always looking for ways to make their visit more enjoyable by offering personalized recommendations or suggesting unique drink combinations. Finally, I’m highly organized and detail-oriented which allows me to efficiently manage all aspects of the bar operations.”

14. Which bars do you admire most and why?

This question is a great way to see how much you know about the industry and what bars you have visited. Another bar I admire is The Library Bar in New York City. This bar has an incredible atmosphere, with its cozy library-style decor and warm lighting. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy a drink after a long day. What I really like about this bar is their commitment to providing quality service and making sure each customer feels welcome.”

15. What do you think is the most important skill for a head bartender to have?

Bartenders are often responsible for managing a bar’s staff, creating drink recipes and ensuring customers have a good experience. Employers ask this question to make sure you understand the role of a head bartender and what skills you possess that can help you succeed in it. When preparing your answer, think about which skills you feel are most important for bartenders to have. Explain why these skills are so important and share an example of when you used them in your previous position.

Example: “The most important skill for a head bartender to have is the ability to lead and manage a team. As head bartender, I understand that it is my responsibility to ensure that all staff members are working together efficiently and effectively. 16. How often do you recommend changing out the ice in the bar’s ice bins?

When changing out the ice, I also recommend using filtered water. This will ensure that there are no impurities in the ice cubes that could alter the flavor of the drinks. Finally, I always suggest having multiple ice bins so that you can have one bin dedicated to fresh ice while still being able to use the other bin for drinks. This way, you can quickly switch between fresh and used ice as needed.”

17. There is a new bartender that is struggling to learn the recipes for popular drinks. How do you handle the situation?

Bartenders need to be able to make a variety of drinks, and the interviewer may ask you this question to see how you would help someone learn their recipes. In your answer, explain that you would take time to teach them each recipe until they are comfortable making it on their own. 18. Describe a time when you had to make an important decision quickly and how did it turn out?

19. Do you have any experience creating new drink recipes?

I’m also well-versed in classic cocktails, so if the bar has any signature drinks, I can easily recreate them. Finally, I’m always looking for ways to innovate and experiment with different flavor combinations.”

20. What systems do you use to ensure that all of the bartenders are following proper safety protocols?

22. If a customer orders a drink that is not on our menu, what steps would you take to accommodate them?

In your answer, explain that you would first check if any of the ingredients are already stocked in the bar.
