How Long Do I Have to Pick Up Western Union?

Western Union cash transfers are generally available for pickup for 90 days. If the recipient doesn’t collect the money within that window, the transfer expires, but the funds aren’t lost. Either the sender or the recipient can request a renewal or a refund.

The 90-Day Pickup Window

Once a sender completes a money transfer designated for cash pickup, the recipient typically has 90 days to visit a Western Union agent location and collect the funds. You’ll need to bring a valid government-issued ID and the tracking number (called an MTCN, or Money Transfer Control Number) that the sender received when they initiated the transfer.

There’s no requirement to pick up the money on a specific day within that 90-day period. You can go the same day the transfer is sent or wait several weeks. The funds simply sit available at any participating agent location until the window closes.

What Happens After 90 Days

If the 90-day window passes without a pickup, Western Union marks the transfer as expired. The money doesn’t disappear, but it’s no longer instantly available at agent locations. At this point you have two options: renew the transfer or cancel it for a refund.

To renew, either the sender or the recipient can call Western Union customer care at 1-800-325-6000. Once the transfer is renewed, the funds become available for pickup again at agent locations. To cancel instead, the sender can call that same number, visit the original agent location where they sent the money, or request a cancellation through their Western Union online profile. Cancellations are only possible if the funds haven’t already been picked up or deposited into an account.

When Unclaimed Funds Go to the State

If no one renews or cancels the transfer and the money sits unclaimed long enough, Western Union is legally required to turn it over to a state unclaimed property program. Every state has laws that set a dormancy period, typically one to five years, after which financial institutions must send uncollected funds to the state government.

Once the money has been transferred to a state program, you can no longer recover it through Western Union. Instead, you’d need to file a claim through your state’s unclaimed property office, which usually involves providing identification and proof that the funds belong to you. This process can take weeks or months, so it’s far easier to act within the 90-day window or request a renewal shortly after it closes.

How to Check Transfer Status

If you’re not sure whether a transfer is still active, you can track it on the Western Union website or mobile app using the MTCN. The sender can also check the status through their online account. If the transfer shows as expired, contact customer care to ask about renewal or a refund before the dormancy clock runs out.
