Amex points from everyday purchases typically become available within 24 to 72 hours after your minimum payment posts to your account. They don’t appear the moment you swipe your card, though. Points go through a pending phase first, and the timeline varies depending on whether you’re waiting on regular spending rewards, a welcome bonus, or a transfer to a travel partner.
How Regular Purchase Points Post
When you make a purchase with an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points, those points show up as “pending” in your account. They stay in that status until your billing statement closes and you make at least your minimum payment by the due date. Once Amex processes your payment, the pending points convert to available points within 24 to 72 hours.
This means the total wait from the moment you buy something to the moment you can actually use those points could be anywhere from a few days to over a month, depending on where you are in your billing cycle. A purchase made the day after your statement closes will sit in pending status for nearly the entire next billing period before becoming available. A purchase made the day before your statement closes will move much faster, since you’ll get your statement (and make your payment) soon after.
The key requirement is paying at least the minimum. If you miss a payment or pay late, your pending points won’t convert to available points on schedule.
Welcome Bonus Timing
Amex officially states that welcome bonus points post 8 to 12 weeks after you meet the minimum spending requirement. In practice, most cardholders see their welcome bonus land much sooner, often within a few days of hitting the spending threshold. This applies to both Membership Rewards cards and co-branded cards like Delta or Hilton.
If you’re tracking your progress toward a welcome bonus, keep in mind that only posted transactions count toward the spending requirement. Pending charges that haven’t fully processed won’t push you over the line. Once your final qualifying purchase posts and you’ve clearly met the threshold, watch your points balance over the next several days. If nothing appears after 12 weeks, contact Amex directly.
Referral Bonus Timing
If you refer a friend to American Express and they’re approved, your referral bonus points can take up to 10 weeks to appear in your account. This is one of the slower timelines in the Amex ecosystem, so don’t plan on using referral points for an upcoming trip unless you have a wide buffer.
How Fast Points Transfer to Travel Partners
Transferring Membership Rewards points to airline and hotel loyalty programs is one of the most valuable ways to use them, but the speed varies significantly by partner. Some transfers land almost instantly, while others take over two weeks.
Here’s what to expect for airline partners:
- Instant or near-instant: British Airways and Virgin Atlantic transfers are listed as instant, though Amex notes you should allow up to 48 hours for completion. Delta SkyMiles transfers typically arrive within 30 minutes.
- 1 to 2 days: Emirates Skywards and Qatar Airways transfers generally complete within 48 hours. Marriott Bonvoy hotel transfers also fall in this range, usually posting within one business day.
- 3 to 5 business days: Cathay, Qantas, Flying Blue (Air France/KLM), Iberia, Etihad, and SAS EuroBonus all fall in this window.
- Over a week: Singapore KrisFlyer is the slowest at up to 15 working days. Hilton Honors takes up to 5 working days, and Radisson Rewards can take up to 10 working days.
These timelines matter most when you’re trying to book award flights or hotel stays before availability disappears. If you spot a great redemption with Singapore Airlines, for example, you’ll need to transfer points well in advance and hope the seat holds. For British Airways or Delta, you can transfer and book in the same sitting with reasonable confidence.
One important note: point transfers to partners are irreversible. Once you send Membership Rewards points to an airline or hotel program, you can’t move them back. Make sure you’ve confirmed award availability before initiating a transfer, especially with slower partners where you’d be stuck waiting days with no guarantee the booking will still be open.
When Points Seem Delayed
If your points haven’t appeared within the expected timeframe, a few things could be happening. The most common reason for delayed regular purchase points is simply that your payment hasn’t posted yet. Even if you submitted a payment, it can take a business day or two for Amex to apply it to your account, and the 24-to-72-hour clock doesn’t start until that happens.
For welcome bonuses, double-check that your qualifying purchases have all moved from pending to posted status. Returns and refunds can also reduce your total below the spending threshold without you realizing it. You can track your progress toward the welcome bonus in the Amex app or website under your card’s benefits section.
If you’re past the expected window and points still haven’t appeared, calling the number on the back of your card is the fastest path to resolution. Amex customer service can see your points status in real time and manually review any pending bonuses.
