The Approval and Shipping Timeline

Discover’s application process has two phases, and how long each takes depends on your situation. Most applicants get an instant decision. If your application is straightforward and your credit profile is clean, you’ll know within a couple of minutes whether you’re approved.

Some applications go to “pending” status, which means a human reviewer needs to look at your credit report and possibly request additional documentation. That review process typically takes five to seven business days on its own, before the card even ships. If your application is pending, the total wait from application to mailbox could stretch to two or three weeks.

Business days exclude weekends and holidays, so keep that in mind if you’re approved on a Friday afternoon or near a holiday weekend.

Using Your Card Before It Arrives

You don’t necessarily have to wait for the physical card to start spending. Discover offers a virtual card number to eligible applicants immediately upon approval. This isn’t a separate product. It’s a digital version of your new card number that connects to your account, letting you shop online and earn rewards right away.

You can also add the virtual card number to a digital wallet on your phone, which means you could use it for in-store contactless payments at retailers that accept tap-to-pay. This effectively eliminates the waiting period for many everyday purchases.

Not everyone qualifies for instant access, though. You won’t receive a virtual card number if your application includes a balance transfer, if Discover needs additional documentation to verify your identity, or if other account-specific factors apply. The Discover it Miles Card and the Discover it Secured Card don’t offer virtual card numbers at all, so with those products you’ll need to wait for the physical card before making any purchases.

What to Do If Your Card Hasn’t Arrived
