How Long Is an MBA at Harvard? Full Breakdown

Harvard Business School’s MBA is a two-year, full-time program. Students arrive on campus in late August for orientation and graduate the following May, roughly 21 months later. There is no part-time, online, or accelerated option for the MBA at HBS.

How the Two Years Break Down

The first year, known as the Required Curriculum (RC), runs from late August through the spring. Every student in the cohort takes the same set of core courses covering finance, accounting, marketing, strategy, leadership, and operations. Classes are taught almost entirely through the case method, where you read a real business scenario and discuss it in sections of about 90 students.

Between the first and second year, you complete a summer internship. HBS considers this a required part of the degree, not an optional extra. Most internships last roughly 10 to 12 weeks, though HBS sets no minimum length. Students typically use this time to test a career path, whether that’s consulting, investment banking, tech, private equity, or a startup.

The second year, called the Elective Curriculum (EC), starts the following fall and runs through May commencement. You choose from a wide catalog of electives and can cross-register for courses at other Harvard schools or MIT. The second year is significantly more flexible, letting you tailor your schedule around career interests.

Total Time on Campus

Orientation begins in the final week of August. Harvard University’s commencement ceremony falls in late May. That puts your total time from first day to graduation at about 21 months, with a summer break in between. The two academic years each span roughly nine months, following the traditional fall and spring semester pattern.

Joint Degree Programs Take Longer

If you pursue a joint degree, expect to spend three to four years total rather than two. The MBA/MPP (Master in Public Policy) and MBA/MPA-ID (Master in Public Administration in International Development), both offered with Harvard Kennedy School, are three-year programs. These combine the core curricula of both schools with electives from each.

HBS also offers joint degrees with Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and other graduate programs across the university. These typically run three to four years depending on the partner school’s requirements. In each case, you save roughly a year compared to completing both degrees separately.

What You Won’t Find at HBS

Unlike many business schools, Harvard does not offer a one-year MBA, a part-time MBA, an evening program, or an online MBA. The only path to a Harvard MBA is the two-year residential program in Boston. HBS does run shorter executive education programs for working professionals, but those do not award an MBA degree.

This means you should plan for two full years away from the workforce (aside from your summer internship). For most students, that translates to about 21 months from move-in to diploma, plus the time you spend on applications and preparation beforehand.
