You can add money to your Discover debit card by setting up direct deposit, transferring funds from another bank, depositing checks through the mobile app, or using a fee-free ATM. Discover doesn’t charge fees for any of these methods, making it straightforward to keep your account funded.
Set Up Direct Deposit
Direct deposit is the fastest and most hands-off way to fund your Discover checking account. You’ll need your Discover account number and the bank’s routing number, both available in your online dashboard or mobile app. Give those to your employer’s payroll department or enter them into your company’s self-service portal. Government benefits like Social Security can also be routed to your Discover account through the same process.
Discover offers early direct deposit, which can make your paycheck available up to two days before your scheduled payday. This happens automatically when your employer sends the deposit details ahead of time. There’s no extra sign-up or fee involved. Not every payroll provider sends funds early enough for this to kick in, but when it works, it’s a nice perk.
Transfer From Another Bank Account
If you have money sitting in a checking or savings account at another bank, you can move it to your Discover account through an ACH transfer. Log into your Discover online banking or mobile app, navigate to the transfers section, and link your external bank account. Discover will verify the connection, usually by sending two small test deposits to the external account that you’ll need to confirm.
Once linked, you can pull money from the other bank into your Discover account whenever you need to. Most ACH transfers take one to three business days to complete, though about 80% finish within a single day according to the national clearinghouse that processes these transactions. Transfer limits vary by institution, so if you’re sending from another bank, check that bank’s outbound transfer cap. Daily limits at major banks typically range from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the institution and your account history.
Deposit Checks With the Mobile App
The Discover mobile app lets you deposit paper checks by photographing the front and back. Before snapping the picture, endorse the back of the check with your signature and write “For Deposit Only” underneath. Both are required, and skipping the restrictive endorsement can cause the deposit to be rejected.
How quickly you can access the funds depends on how long you’ve been a Discover customer:
- Existing customers (account open and funded for at least 30 days): Checks drawn on Discover are available immediately in full. For U.S. Treasury checks, cashier’s checks, certified checks, and other standard checks, the first $275 is available the same business day. The next $6,450 becomes available by the next business day, and any remaining amount clears by the second business day after deposit.
- New customers (account open fewer than 30 days): Funds are generally available no later than the fifth business day after deposit, with a maximum hold of seven business days.
If you’re new to Discover and need quick access to deposited funds, keep those longer hold times in mind before relying on a check deposit for an upcoming payment.
Use a Fee-Free ATM
Discover gives you access to over 60,000 fee-free ATMs through the Allpoint and MoneyPass networks. Many of these ATMs accept cash deposits, not just withdrawals. You can find the nearest deposit-capable ATM through the Discover app or by searching on the Allpoint or MoneyPass websites. This is your best option if you have cash you want to put into your account, since Discover is an online bank without physical branches.
When using an ATM for deposits, the machine will typically count and verify your cash on the spot. Funds from cash deposits are usually available quickly, though the exact timing can vary by ATM network. Keep your receipt until the deposit shows up in your account.
Wire Transfers
You can also receive money through an incoming wire transfer. This is most useful for large or time-sensitive payments, like proceeds from a home sale or a payment from overseas. You’ll need to provide the sender with your Discover account number, routing number, and possibly a SWIFT code for international wires. Discover does not charge a fee for incoming wire transfers, though the sending bank may charge its own outgoing wire fee. Domestic wires typically arrive the same business day.
What About Cash Reloads?
Because Discover operates entirely online, you won’t find a branch teller to hand cash to. Your two realistic options for depositing cash are fee-free ATMs in the Allpoint and MoneyPass networks and, in some cases, third-party reload services at retail locations. If cash deposits are a regular need, locate your nearest deposit-capable ATM ahead of time so you’re not stuck searching when you need one.
