How to Add Money to Your Cash App Card: 3 Methods

You can add money to your Cash App card in three ways: transfer funds from a linked bank account inside the app, deposit physical cash at a participating retailer, or use mobile check deposit. Each method has different steps, fees, and processing times, so the best choice depends on whether you’re working with a bank account, paper bills, or a check.

Add Cash From a Linked Bank Account

The fastest way to load your Cash App balance is by pulling money from a bank account you’ve already connected. To set this up, you need to enter your debit card information in the app, which links your bank. Once linked, adding cash takes just a few taps:

  • Open Cash App and tap the “Money” tab (the dollar sign icon on your home screen).
  • Tap “Add Cash.”
  • Enter the amount you want to add.
  • Tap “Add” and confirm with your PIN, Touch ID, or Face ID.

The funds typically appear in your Cash App balance within minutes, though bank processing can occasionally cause short delays. There’s no fee for adding money this way. Once the balance is loaded, you can spend it with your Cash App card anywhere Visa is accepted.

Deposit Physical Cash at a Store

If you have paper money you’d like to put on your Cash App card, you can deposit it at dozens of major retail chains. Cash App charges a flat $1 processing fee per deposit, which is automatically deducted from the amount you hand over. If you have Green Status (a perk for users who receive qualifying direct deposits), the $1 fee is waived.

There are two deposit methods depending on the store: card swipe or barcode scan. At some retailers, you can swipe your physical Cash App card at the register. At others, you’ll generate a barcode in the app and have the cashier scan it. A handful of stores support both.

Stores that accept card swipe and barcode deposits include 7-Eleven, CVS Pharmacy, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Kroger (and its family of grocery stores), Walgreens, and several others. Barcode-only locations include Circle K, H-E-B, Sheetz, Pilot Travel Centers, and Walmart, among many others. At Walmart specifically, you’ll need to visit the customer service desk or MoneyCenter rather than a regular checkout lane, and those counters may have different hours than the rest of the store.

To deposit cash using a barcode, open Cash App, tap the “Money” tab, then tap “Add Cash” followed by “Paper Money Deposit.” The app generates a barcode you show the cashier. Hand them your bills, and the funds (minus the $1 fee) land in your Cash App balance.

Deposit a Check With Mobile Check Deposit

Cash App lets eligible users deposit physical checks by photographing them inside the app. This works with paychecks, personal checks, cashier’s checks, and government-issued checks such as tax refunds, Social Security payments, and unemployment checks. Cash App does not accept savings bonds, money orders, credit advancement checks, or checks written from your own personal bank account.

Before snapping the photo, endorse the check properly. Using blue or black ink, sign the back of the check and write “Cash App Deposit” directly under your signature. Skipping this step or writing it incorrectly can delay processing or cause the deposit to fail entirely. The check also needs to be less than 180 days old.

Processing takes up to six business days in most cases, though many checks clear sooner. In rare situations it can stretch to eight business days. Weekends and bank holidays don’t count as business days, so keep that in mind if you need the funds quickly.

When a Deposit Fails

If your attempt to add cash is declined, the most common culprits are straightforward. Your linked debit card may have expired or your bank may have flagged the transaction as unusual. Cash App’s own fraud detection system can also block a transfer if it spots potentially unauthorized activity on your account. When this happens, you’ll typically get a notification inside the app asking you to confirm whether you recognize the transaction. Approving it usually lets the transfer go through on a second attempt.

Other reasons deposits fail include insufficient funds in your linked bank account, an internet connection issue mid-transaction, or entering an incorrect PIN. If you’re depositing a check and it’s rejected, double-check your endorsement and make sure the check image is clear, well-lit, and shows all four corners.

How Your Balance Works With the Cash App Card

Your Cash App card draws directly from your Cash App balance, not from your linked bank account. This is an important distinction. If your Cash App balance is $0, your card will decline even if your bank account has plenty of money. You need to actively move funds into your Cash App balance using one of the methods above before the card will work for purchases or ATM withdrawals. Think of it like a prepaid card that you reload yourself.
