To apply for the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) exam, you need to complete a 40-hour training, pass an Initial Competency Assessment, and submit your application through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) online portal. The entire process from start to exam day typically takes a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on how quickly you line up each requirement.
Requirements Before You Can Apply
You must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Beyond that, three things need to happen before you’re eligible to submit an application: completing the training, passing a competency assessment, and clearing a background check.
The 40-hour training covers the foundations of applied behavior analysis, including measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation, and professional conduct. You can complete it through an approved training provider, and many are available online. When you finish, you’ll receive a certificate of completion, which you’ll need to upload later.
The Initial Competency Assessment
After finishing your 40-hour training, you need to pass an Initial Competency Assessment. This is a live, hands-on evaluation where an assessor watches you demonstrate the skills covered in your training, typically while working with an actual client.
The assessment must be conducted by a BCBA or BCaBA who has completed the BACB’s 8-hour supervision training. That person is called the “responsible assessor.” They can delegate parts of the assessment to an “assistant assessor,” but the assistant must hold at least an active RBT certification and must have demonstrated proficiency in the material through direct observation. All parties involved, including you, the assessor, and the client receiving services, must be connected to the same organization, either through employment or a contractual relationship.
A few restrictions apply. The assessor cannot be a family member, cannot be someone who works for you, and cannot be someone you supervise. The relationship needs to reflect a standard professional dynamic where the assessor has genuine authority to evaluate your skills.
Timing matters here. The competency assessment cannot be completed more than 90 days before you submit your RBT certification application. If you wait too long after your assessment to apply, you’ll need to redo it.
Setting Up Your BACB Account
You’ll apply through the BACB’s online portal, so you need to create an account if you don’t already have one. A few details worth knowing upfront:
- Create the account yourself. Don’t let your employer, supervisor, or anyone else set it up on your behalf. The account is tied to your personal certification record.
- Use a personal email address. If you use a work or school email, you risk losing access to your account if you ever leave that job or school. A personal Gmail, Outlook, or similar address is the safer choice.
- Add bacb.com to your safe sender list. Important notifications about your application and exam scheduling come by email. You don’t want them landing in spam.
If you ever lose access to your account, contact the BACB through their online form rather than creating a new one. Duplicate accounts cause problems.
Submitting the Application
Once logged in, navigate to the RBT tab in your account and start a new RBT Certification Application. You’ll need to upload three documents:
- Certificate of completion for the 40-hour training
- RBT Initial Competency Assessment form
- RBT Certification Application Attestation form
Each section of the application allows only one attachment, so if any of your documents span multiple pages, combine them into a single file (a multi-page PDF works) before uploading. The application also requires you to pay a fee. Once payment is submitted, the clock starts on your background check requirement.
The Background Check
Within 180 days of paying for your application, you must complete and pass a criminal background check. The scope is comparable to the checks required of home health aides, child care workers, and teachers in your area.
You don’t upload background check results directly. Instead, a BCBA or BCaBA reviews the results and confirms that you passed by attesting to it within your application. That certificant is responsible for keeping the documentation on file in case the BACB audits the record later. Your employer or supervisor typically handles coordinating this step, but make sure it’s completed within the 180-day window or your application could be affected.
Scheduling and Taking the Exam
After the BACB approves your application, you’ll receive authorization to schedule your exam through Pearson VUE, the BACB’s testing partner. You can take the exam at a Pearson VUE testing center or, depending on availability, through their online proctoring option.
The RBT exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions, 10 of which are unscored pilot questions mixed in (you won’t know which ones). You have 90 minutes to complete it. The questions cover the same task list domains from your 40-hour training: measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation and reporting, and professional conduct.
You’ll receive a preliminary pass or fail result on screen immediately after finishing. Official results are posted to your BACB account shortly after.
After You Pass
Passing the exam doesn’t mean you’re fully certified on the spot. Your RBT certification becomes active once all requirements are verified, including the background check attestation. Once active, your certification is valid for one year. To maintain it, you’ll need to complete ongoing supervision requirements and submit a recertification application annually, along with updated competency documentation.
Keep your BACB account information current. If your name, address, or employer changes, update your profile right away. Your certification status, renewal deadlines, and all official correspondence flow through that account.
