You can study nail technology theory from home through online coursework, but every state requires hands-on training hours completed in person before you can get licensed. Once licensed, you can set up a home-based nail business, though that involves meeting zoning, ventilation, and sanitation requirements that go beyond just having a table and some polish. What You Can (and Can’t) Learn Online

Most states split nail tech training into two parts: classroom theory and hands-on practice. Many municipalities allow home-based personal service businesses through a home occupation permit or conditional use permit, but they may limit things like client parking, signage, the number of daily visitors, or the percentage of your home’s square footage you can dedicate to the business. Essential Equipment and Costs

A professional home setup doesn’t require a massive investment, but cutting corners on tools shows up in your work. Here’s what a starting kit typically includes:

  • Manicure table and chair. A sturdy, ventilated table with a built-in or attached exhaust fan runs $150 to $400. You’ll also want a comfortable client chair and a rolling stool for yourself.
  • Electric nail drill. A quality professional drill with a set of bits costs roughly $170 to $260. Bit kits designed for natural nails or specific techniques add $30 to $80.
  • Acrylic or gel starter kits. Acrylic starter kits with powders, liquids, brushes, and forms run around $180. Gel base and topcoat bundles are around $110. You’ll likely want both if you plan to offer a full menu.
  • Files and buffers. Professional-grade file packs (100-count) range from about $36 for finer grits to $100 for buffer files. These are disposable or single-use items you’ll restock regularly.

A home salon grows almost entirely on trust. Your first clients will likely come from your personal network, and referrals will be your most reliable growth channel. A few things accelerate that process:

Create a portfolio on Instagram or TikTok showing your work. Close-up, well-lit photos and short videos of nail art or technique demonstrations attract local followers who convert into bookings. Use an online scheduling tool so clients can book without back-and-forth texting. Many free or low-cost options integrate with your social media pages.

Set clear policies on cancellations, deposits, and late arrivals from day one. A $10 to $25 booking deposit, applied toward the service total, dramatically reduces no-shows. Price your services based on the time and materials each one requires, not on what you think people will pay.
