Becoming an automotive technician typically takes six months to two years of formal training, depending on whether you pursue a certificate or an associate degree. Most technicians combine that education with hands-on shop experience and then earn professional certifications that open the door to higher pay and specialized roles. Choose a Training Program

You have two main paths for formal education: a certificate program or an associate degree. Certificate programs run about 6 to 12 months and focus tightly on core repair skills. Associate degree programs take roughly two years and add general education courses alongside deeper technical training. Both combine classroom instruction with shop time, so you’ll spend a significant portion of your program physically working on engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems.

Community colleges tend to be the most affordable option, with tuition often well under $10,000 for in-district students completing a certificate. Private trade schools charge more but sometimes offer tighter industry connections or newer equipment. When evaluating any program, check whether it holds accreditation from a recognized body, because that matters for employer credibility and for qualifying toward professional certifications later.

You don’t strictly need a degree to work on cars. Some shops hire entry-level helpers with no formal education and train them on the job. Get Hands-On Experience

Classroom training builds your knowledge base, but employers care most about what you can do with your hands under a hood. The amount of experience you need depends on the certifications you’re pursuing. You don’t have to earn all of them at once. Many technicians start with one or two in areas they work in daily and add more over time. Earning certification across all the core automobile categories qualifies you as an ASE Master Technician, a distinction that carries real weight in job interviews and salary negotiations.

Each ASE certification must be renewed periodically through retesting, so plan on continuing your education throughout your career. The upside is that every renewal keeps your skills current with evolving vehicle technology.

Consider Manufacturer-Specific Training

If you want to work at a dealership or specialize in a particular brand, manufacturer-specific training programs can set you apart. Ford, BMW, Stellantis, and other automakers partner with trade schools to offer advanced training that teaches you to service and repair their vehicles using brand-specific technology and diagnostic systems.

These programs typically require you to complete a core automotive technology curriculum first. From there, eligibility depends on your GPA, attendance record, and other manufacturer-set criteria. Completing a Ford program, for example, can earn you more than a dozen brand-specific credentials. BMW’s program can lead to factory credentials and an associate-level certification after passing BMW-specific ASE testing and hands-on assessments. Stellantis offers the opportunity to earn Level 1 technician status.

Manufacturer training isn’t required to have a successful career, but dealerships strongly prefer candidates who hold these credentials, and the pay at dealerships often exceeds what independent shops offer.

Budget for Your Tools

Unlike most professions, automotive technicians are expected to own their own hand tools. Shops provide lifts, alignment machines, and other large equipment, but your socket sets, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, diagnostic meters, and tool cart come out of your own pocket.

A starter tool set runs roughly $1,000 to $2,000 depending on the brands you choose and how complete a set your program or employer requires. Professional-grade tools from brands like Snap-on cost more upfront but come with lifetime warranties and hold up to daily shop use. Many technicians build their collection gradually, buying specialty tools as they need them for new types of work. Tool truck financing is common in the industry, letting you make weekly payments on purchases, though the interest rates can be steep.

Over a full career, a well-equipped technician’s toolbox can represent an investment of $10,000 to $30,000 or more. Think of it as a capital investment in your earning ability: better tools let you work faster and take on more complex jobs.

Electric Vehicle Specialization

The growing number of electric and hybrid vehicles on the road is creating demand for technicians trained to work on high-voltage systems. EV powertrains operate at 300 volts DC and above, which introduces serious safety considerations that don’t exist with conventional vehicles. Specialized training covers safe handling procedures, high-voltage system diagnostics, battery service, and electric motor repair.

ETA International offers an Electric Vehicle Technician certification that requires completing an approved EV training program and passing an exam covering both knowledge and hands-on skills. The certification renews every four years through continuing education. ASE has also expanded its test offerings to cover hybrid and electric vehicle technology.

Adding EV credentials to your resume positions you for work at dealerships selling electric models and at independent shops that want to capture this growing segment of repair work. As the vehicle fleet shifts, technicians without any EV training may find their job options narrowing over time.

What To Expect for Pay and Advancement

Entry-level technicians performing oil changes, tire rotations, and basic maintenance typically earn in the range of $30,000 to $38,000 per year. As you gain certifications and experience, pay climbs. Mid-career technicians with multiple ASE certifications and diagnostic skills commonly earn $50,000 to $65,000, and master technicians at busy dealerships or specialty shops can push past $75,000.

Many shops pay technicians on a flat-rate system rather than an hourly wage. Under flat rate, you’re paid a set number of hours for each job based on a published labor guide, regardless of how long the repair actually takes. A skilled technician who works efficiently can “beat the book” and effectively earn more per hour. The flip side is that slow days or complex comebacks can cut into your earnings.

Career advancement paths include shop foreman, service manager, or opening your own repair business. Some technicians pivot into related roles like service writing, parts management, insurance appraisal, or technical training for manufacturers and tool companies. If you enroll in a certificate program and work part-time in a shop, you could be a certified, employable technician within about 18 months. An associate degree path with concurrent work experience puts you at roughly two to two and a half years. Either way, the clock on your ASE work experience requirement starts ticking as soon as you begin doing hands-on repair, including time logged during internships or co-op placements.

The fastest route is to start working at a shop immediately, skip formal schooling, and study for ASE exams on your own. This can work, but most technicians who go this route say the lack of structured diagnostic training slows them down in the long run.
