The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a credential in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). RBTs work under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to implement behavior-analytic services. They help individuals, often those with autism spectrum disorder, achieve skill acquisition and meaningful behavior change. The certification process is managed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and utilizes online training components for flexibility.
Understanding the RBT Role and Basic Eligibility
The RBT’s scope of practice centers on implementing treatment plans designed by a supervising BCBA. This involves delivering one-on-one therapy, collecting objective data on a client’s behavior, and utilizing various reinforcement and teaching procedures. Technicians are responsible for the direct application of behavior-analytic principles, while the supervisor retains responsibility for the overarching program design and clinical oversight.
Before beginning the formal training, applicants must meet mandatory foundational requirements set by the BACB. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and hold a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent, such as a GED. Additionally, all applicants are required to pass a background check that is comparable to those mandated for other professionals working with vulnerable populations, such as those in schools or childcare centers.
Completing the Required 40-Hour Training Online
The 40-hour training component provides the initial theoretical and didactic instruction for all RBT candidates. This training must cover the entire RBT Task List, which outlines the required knowledge and skills, and can be completed entirely online through accredited providers. Core topics include measurement, ethical considerations, skill acquisition, and behavior reduction procedures.
Online programs offer a choice between self-paced modules, which allow flexibility to complete the coursework around an existing schedule, or more structured, live virtual instruction. The training must be completed within a maximum period of 180 days and a minimum of 5 days. The instruction must be overseen by a qualified BCBA or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), who is designated as the Responsible Trainer for the course. Upon successful completion, the training provider issues a certificate, which is a necessary document for the final application.
Passing the RBT Competency Assessment
Following the completion of the 40-hour online training, candidates must undergo a practical evaluation known as the RBT Competency Assessment. This step is a hands-on demonstration of the skills learned in the training. The assessment must be administered by a qualified BACB certificant, such as a BCBA, who serves as the responsible assessor.
The assessment covers twenty task items across domains including measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, and professionalism. While the assessment is a practical evaluation, some portions may be conducted via live, two-way video conferencing. The assessor evaluates the candidate’s ability to perform tasks like continuous measurement, implementing discrete trial teaching, and correctly using reinforcement. For at least three tasks, the candidate must demonstrate proficiency while working with an actual client receiving behavior-analytic services.
Submitting the Official Application and Background Check
Once the theoretical training and practical competency assessment are successfully completed, the formal application process begins. Candidates must create an account in the BACB application system and upload the required documentation, including the 40-hour training certificate and the completed Initial Competency Assessment form. The background check must be completed no more than 180 days before submission and must be comparable to checks required for child care professionals.
A certified attestor, often the supervising BCBA who conducted the assessment, must complete the RBT Certification Application Attestation form. This form verifies that the applicant meets the age, education, and background check requirements. An application fee is paid to the BACB to initiate the review process. The candidate will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email after the application is approved, allowing them to schedule the final examination.
Scheduling and Taking the RBT Examination
The final step in the initial certification process is passing the RBT Examination, which is a standardized, computer-based test of applied knowledge. Candidates must schedule their exam appointment at an authorized Pearson VUE testing center, as remote testing is not permitted. The exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions, including 10 unscored pilot questions. Candidates are allotted 90 minutes for completion.
Preparation for this exam should be focused on the RBT Task List, which acts as the blueprint for all content covered. Study strategies involve reviewing the 40-hour training materials, taking practice exams, and mastering the application of behavior-analytic concepts to real-world scenarios. The exam assesses the candidate’s ability to apply the principles of behavior analysis, including measurement, skill acquisition, and behavior reduction strategies. Passing this examination is the final requirement for the BACB to grant the RBT credential.
Maintaining RBT Certification
RBT certification is subject to an annual renewal cycle. To renew the certification each year, the technician must complete a renewal Competency Assessment, which is a practical evaluation similar to the initial one. This assessment must be administered by a qualified supervisor within 45 days of the certification expiration date.
Maintaining ongoing supervision is a continuous requirement. The RBT must receive a minimum of 5% of their total hours providing behavior-analytic services each month under the oversight of a qualified BCBA. This supervision includes at least two face-to-face meetings per month, with at least one involving a direct observation of the RBT working with a client. Renewal also requires the RBT to adhere to the BACB’s ethical requirements and submit the renewal application and fee.
