How to Become an MEP Engineer

Here are several steps you should take to become an MEP engineer.

1. Earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or civil engineering

Most MEP engineers hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or civil engineering. Some schools offer specialized programs in mechanical engineering technology, HVAC and refrigeration, building construction or fire protection engineering that can help you learn about specific areas of MEP engineering.

During your first two years of college, take courses in physics, calculus, chemistry and computer-aided drafting to prepare for graduate-level coursework. During your last two years of school, focus on taking elective courses related to the type of MEP engineering you want to practice. For example, if you want to work with electrical systems, take classes in circuits, power distribution and microprocessors.

2. Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to become an Engineer-in-Training (EIT)
