To cancel your Wisely card, you need to call Wisely’s customer service team. There’s no way to close your account through the app or website. The phone number you call depends on which type of Wisely card you have, and you’ll want to deal with your remaining balance before or during the call.
Which Number to Call
Wisely operates three card products, each with its own customer service line:
- Wisely Pay: 1-866-313-6901
- Wisely Direct: 1-866-313-9029
- Wisely Cash: 1-877-431-5860
If you’re not sure which card you have, check the front of the card itself or any welcome materials you received when you activated it. The card name is typically printed on the front. You can also log into the myWisely app, where your card type should be visible on your account dashboard.
What to Do With Your Remaining Balance
Before you close the account, you’ll need to handle any money still on the card. Wisely gives you two options. You can spend down the balance to zero yourself, using the card for purchases or withdrawing cash at an ATM. Or you can ask customer service to mail a check for the remaining balance to your address on file. Wisely does not charge a fee for that check.
Spending the balance down yourself is usually faster. If you’re making a purchase that’s more than your remaining balance, most retailers will let you split the transaction, paying the rest with another card or cash. ATM withdrawals work too, though your ATM may charge its own fee, and you may not be able to withdraw an odd amount like $13.47.
If you choose the check option, expect to wait for standard mail delivery. Make sure the mailing address on your account is current before you request it.
Why You Shouldn’t Just Stop Using the Card
If you leave a balance on the card and simply stop using it, Wisely will start charging a $4.00 monthly inactivity fee after 90 days with no transactions. That fee gets deducted from whatever balance remains, gradually eating away at your money until there’s nothing left. This is the main reason to formally cancel rather than toss the card in a drawer.
Even if your balance is already zero, it’s worth calling to officially close the account. An unclosed account stays open in Wisely’s system, and if a future employer or payroll provider loads funds onto it unexpectedly, you could end up with money sitting on a card you’ve forgotten about.
What to Expect on the Call
When you reach a customer service representative, they’ll verify your identity. Have the following ready: your Wisely card number, the name and address on the account, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. The representative will confirm your remaining balance, ask how you’d like to receive any leftover funds, and then process the closure.
The call itself is typically short, around 5 to 10 minutes including hold time. Once the account is closed, the card is deactivated and can’t be used again. If you had direct deposit set up through your employer (common with Wisely Pay cards, which are often issued as payroll cards), make sure you’ve already switched your direct deposit to a different account before canceling. Otherwise your next paycheck could bounce back to your employer’s payroll system, delaying your pay.
Switching Direct Deposit First
Many people receive their Wisely card through an employer as a payroll card. If that’s your situation, update your direct deposit information with your employer or HR department before you cancel. Provide your new bank account and routing number so future paychecks go to the right place. It can take one to two pay cycles for the change to take effect, so time your cancellation accordingly. Wait until you’ve confirmed at least one paycheck has landed in your new account before calling Wisely to close things out.
