How to Cancel an Ulta Credit Card Without Hurting Credit

You can cancel your Ulta Beauty Rewards credit card by calling Comenity Capital Bank, the card’s issuer. There is no online cancellation option through the account portal, so a phone call is the primary method. Before you pick up the phone, a few steps will make the process smoother and help you avoid surprises on your credit report.

Pay Off Your Balance First

Closing your account does not erase what you owe. Per the cardholder agreement, you remain responsible for any amount owed even after the account is closed, and interest continues accruing on outstanding balances from the day each charge was added until it’s paid in full. If you carry a balance when you close the card, you’ll still receive statements and owe interest until the debt is cleared.

The cleanest approach is to pay your balance to zero before calling. Log in to your Comenity account online or through the Ulta app, confirm your current balance (including any pending transactions), and make a payment. Wait a day or two for the payment to post, then proceed with cancellation. If you’re carrying a promotional financing balance from an Ulta purchase, make sure that’s fully paid as well, since deferred interest can be applied retroactively if the promotional period hasn’t ended.

Call the Right Phone Number

Comenity issues three versions of the Ulta card, each with its own customer service line:

  • Ulta Beauty Rewards Credit Card (store card): 1-866-254-9971, available Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET. Closed Sundays.
  • Ulta Beauty Rewards Mastercard: 1-866-257-9195, available 24/7.
  • Ulta Beauty Rewards World Mastercard: 1-866-271-2680.

If you’re unsure which card you have, check the front of your card. The store-only version won’t have a Mastercard logo and can only be used at Ulta. The Mastercard versions work anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

When you reach a representative, tell them you’d like to close your account. They may try to retain you with a promotional offer or ask your reason for canceling. You’re not required to give a reason, and you can simply decline any retention offers and confirm you want to proceed.

What to Do After the Call

Ask the representative to confirm that your account will be reported as “closed at consumer’s request” to the credit bureaus. This distinction matters because it signals you chose to close the account rather than having it shut down by the issuer. Write down the representative’s name, the date, and any confirmation or reference number you’re given.

As a backup, you can also send a written cancellation request to Comenity’s mailing address: Comenity Capital Bank, PO Box 183003, Columbus, OH 43218-3003. Include your name, account number, and a clear statement that you want the account closed. Send it via certified mail if you want proof of delivery. This isn’t required if you’ve already called, but it creates a paper trail.

Check your credit report about 30 to 60 days after canceling. The account should show as closed with a zero balance. If anything looks off, such as an outstanding balance you already paid or a status that doesn’t reflect your request, dispute it directly with the credit bureau reporting the error.

How Canceling Affects Your Credit Score

Closing any credit card can nudge your credit score downward in two ways. First, it reduces your total available credit, which increases your credit utilization ratio. That ratio measures how much of your available credit you’re currently using across all cards. If you have $10,000 in total credit limits and your Ulta card accounts for $2,000 of that, closing it drops your available credit to $8,000. Any balances on your other cards now represent a larger percentage of your remaining credit, and higher utilization typically lowers your score.

Second, account age plays a role. If the Ulta card is one of your older accounts, closing it can eventually shorten your average credit history. Closed accounts remain on your credit report for up to 10 years, so the impact on account age isn’t immediate, but it will matter down the road.

For most people with several other credit cards, the score dip from closing a store card is small and temporary. If the Ulta card is your only credit card or your oldest account, the effect could be more noticeable. In that case, you might consider keeping the card open with a zero balance and simply not using it, though be aware that some issuers close inactive accounts after an extended period of no activity.

What Happens to Your Ulta Rewards Points

Your Ulta Beauty Rewards loyalty points are tied to your Ulta membership, not your credit card. Canceling the card does not delete your rewards account or any points you’ve already earned. However, you will lose the bonus point earning rate that comes with the credit card. Standard Ulta members earn one point per dollar, while cardholders earn additional points on qualifying purchases. After cancellation, you’ll revert to the standard earning rate on future purchases.

If you have a significant points balance, consider redeeming your points before canceling. Ulta points can be redeemed in increments starting at 100 points for $3 off, scaling up to 2,000 points for $125 off. Using them first ensures you get full value regardless of any changes to your shopping habits after closing the card.
