Changing your bank on Apple Pay depends on what you’re trying to do: swap the card you tap to pay at stores, update the bank account linked to Apple Cash, or change the payment method for App Store and iCloud subscriptions. Each one lives in a different spot on your device, but all take just a few minutes.
Add a New Card to Apple Pay
If you’ve switched banks or opened a new account, the first step is adding your new debit or credit card to the Wallet app. On your iPhone, open the Wallet app and tap the plus (+) button in the upper right corner. You can either hold your card up to the camera to scan it or type in the details manually. Your bank will verify the card, sometimes instantly, sometimes by sending a code via text or email. Once verified, the card is ready to use.
On an Apple Watch, open the Wallet app, scroll down, and tap “Add Card.” On an iPad or Mac with Touch ID, go to Settings (or System Settings on Mac), then Wallet & Apple Pay, and add a card from there. The new card syncs only to the device where you add it, so if you use Apple Pay on both your iPhone and Apple Watch, you’ll need to add it on each one separately.
Remove Your Old Card
Once your new card is working, you can remove the old one. On iPhone, open the Wallet app, tap the card you want to delete, tap the More button (the three dots), then tap Card Details. Scroll down and tap Remove Card. On Apple Watch, open Wallet, tap the card, scroll down, and tap Remove. On iPad, go to Settings, then Wallet & Apple Pay, select the card, and tap Remove Card. The same path works on a Mac through System Settings.
If your phone is lost or stolen and you need to remove cards remotely, sign in to your Apple Account from any browser, click Devices, select the missing device, and click Remove Items under the Wallet & Apple Pay section. You should also call your card issuers directly to let them know.
Set a New Default Card
The first card you add to Apple Pay becomes your default, meaning it’s the one that pops up automatically when you hold your phone near a payment terminal. If you’ve added a new card and want it to be the default, open the Wallet app on your iPhone, then touch and hold the card you want as your primary. Drag it to the front of your stack of cards. The card in front is always the one Apple Pay uses unless you manually select a different card at the terminal.
Change the Bank Account for Apple Cash
Apple Cash is separate from your payment cards. It holds money people send you through Messages or that you receive as Daily Cash from an Apple Card. To transfer that balance to your bank, you need a linked bank account, and updating it is straightforward.
Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap your Apple Cash card. Tap the More button, then tap Card Details. Scroll down and tap Bank Account, then select the account you want to update. From here you can edit your routing number or account number, confirm the new details, and tap Next. If you’d rather start fresh, tap Delete Bank Account Information, confirm the deletion, and then add your new bank’s details. Any changes you make sync automatically across all devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so you only need to do this once.
Update Your Payment Method for Subscriptions
The card or bank you use for App Store purchases, iCloud+ storage, Apple Music, and other Apple subscriptions is tied to your Apple Account, not to the Wallet app. Changing it requires a different set of steps.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap Payment & Shipping. You may need to sign in again. Tap Add Payment Method, enter your new card or bank details, and tap Done. Then tap Edit, tap the red delete icon next to the old method, and tap Remove. If your card number hasn’t changed but you need to update the billing address or expiration date, just tap the existing payment method and edit the details directly.
On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then click Account Settings. Next to Payment Information, click Manage Payments. Click Add Payment to enter the new method, then click Edit next to the old one and remove it. On a Windows PC, the process works through the Apple Music or Apple TV app: click your name in the sidebar, choose View My Account, and look for the Manage Payments option next to Payment Information.
What to Do After Switching
After making any of these changes, do a quick test. For a new Wallet card, try a small purchase at a store or within an app. For Apple Cash, initiate a small transfer to your new bank and confirm it arrives (instant transfers typically take minutes, while standard transfers can take one to three business days). For subscriptions, check that your next billing cycle processes without an error by keeping an eye on your email for any payment failure notices from Apple.
If you use Apple Pay on multiple devices, remember that Wallet cards need to be added and removed on each device individually. Apple Cash bank account changes and Apple Account payment methods, on the other hand, sync across all your devices automatically.
