How to Close an N26 Account From the App or Online

You can close your N26 account directly through the mobile app, and the process takes just a few minutes once your balance is at zero. Before you start, though, there are a few steps worth completing first to avoid losing access to your transaction history or having your remaining funds sent to a holding account.

Before You Close: Prep Your Account

Once your N26 account is closed, you lose access to the app and all the data inside it. Download everything you might need first.

To grab your bank statements in the app, go to the Finances tab, choose the account or Space you want, tap the gear icon, select “Balance statements,” and pick each month you need. On the web version, go to the Home tab, select your account, then choose “Downloads” to find statements organized by month. If you want a full export of your transaction history (not just monthly statements), the web version lets you set custom date ranges and download in either PDF or CSV format under the “Account Activity” section of the Downloads page.

Download statements for every month you had the account open. You may need them for tax filings, disputes, or simply your own records. Former customers can still request documents through a dedicated form on N26’s website, but it’s far easier to do it while you still have full access.

Get Your Balance to Zero

N26 requires a zero balance across your main account, any Spaces (sub-accounts), and Instant Savings before you can close. Transfer your remaining funds to another bank account. If your balance is negative, you’ll need to top it up to zero first.

During the closure process, N26 will ask for an alternative bank account to send any leftover funds. This must be a SEPA-zone IBAN, which covers accounts in the EU, EEA, and a handful of other European countries. If you skip this step or forget to provide an IBAN, you have three days to contact N26 support with the details. After that window, any remaining money gets moved to a holding account, which creates extra hassle to retrieve later.

Before zeroing out, also check for any pending transactions, scheduled payments, or direct debits linked to your N26 account. Redirect those to your new bank account so nothing bounces after closure.

If You Have a Premium Membership

N26 Smart, N26 You, and N26 Metal all come with paid memberships that have their own cancellation rules, separate from closing the account itself. These contracts run for an initial 12-month term and automatically renew into an indefinite contract after that first year.

If you’re within the first 14 days of signing up for a premium plan, you can revoke the membership entirely during that revocation window. Otherwise, you can stop the renewal at any point before the initial 12-month period ends by requesting a specialist through the in-app support chat. Once the contract has renewed and become indefinite, you can cancel at any time directly from the app with no stated early termination fee.

Cancel the premium membership first, then proceed with the full account closure. This ensures you’re not paying for a plan on an account you’re about to shut down.

Closing Through the App

With your balance at zero and your statements downloaded, the closure itself is straightforward. Open the N26 app, navigate to your account settings, and look for the option to close your account. The app will walk you through confirming the closure and providing a SEPA IBAN for any final payouts. Follow the prompts, confirm your decision, and N26 will process the closure.

Closing Without App Access

If you’ve lost access to the app or can’t log in, you can still close your account by email. Send a message to support@n26.com from the email address linked to your N26 account. Attach a signed cancellation form that includes:

  • A written request to close your account, with either a specific date or “as soon as possible”
  • Your full legal name as it appears on the account
  • Your N26 IBAN
  • An alternative SEPA IBAN where N26 can send any remaining funds

This doesn’t need to be a formal document. A clearly written letter or note with your signature (even a scanned or photographed signature) covering all four points will work. N26 processes these manually, so expect it to take longer than the in-app method.

What Happens After Closure

Once the account is closed, your N26 IBAN stops working. Any incoming transfers sent to that IBAN will be rejected. Your login credentials are deactivated, and you won’t be able to access the app or web interface. If you need bank statements or other documents after closure, N26 offers a form specifically for former customers on their support site.

N26 is required to retain certain account records for regulatory purposes, so your data isn’t immediately deleted. If you want to understand what’s kept and for how long, you can submit a data inquiry through their support channels before or after closing.
