To close a Wisely account, you need to call Wisely’s customer service team directly. There is no self-service option to close your account through the app or website. Before you make that call, you should transfer your remaining balance to another account so you don’t leave money behind.
Withdraw Your Balance First
The most important step before closing your Wisely account is getting your money off the card. Once the account is closed, retrieving a leftover balance becomes significantly more complicated, so take care of this first.
You have several ways to move money out through the myWisely app:
- Transfer to a bank account: You can send funds from your Wisely card to up to three different bank accounts. These transfers take one to three business days to process. This is usually the simplest option if you have a checking or savings account elsewhere.
- Transfer to an external debit card: You can send money to one linked debit card, and funds typically arrive within minutes. Note that only one external debit card can be linked at a time, and these transfers are final and not reversible.
- ATM withdrawal: You can pull cash from an ATM, though withdrawal limits and fees apply. Check your cardholder agreement in the app or at mywisely.com for your specific limits and any per-transaction fees.
- Spend down the balance: If the remaining amount is small, you can simply use the card for a purchase. Most retailers let you split payment across two methods, so you can use the Wisely card for whatever is left on it and pay the rest with another card.
Wisely does not offer paper checks as a withdrawal method. If your balance is too low for an ATM withdrawal but too high to ignore, the bank transfer or debit card transfer options are your best bet.
Call Customer Service to Close
Once your balance is at zero (or as close as possible), call the customer service number that matches your specific Wisely product:
- Wisely Pay: 1-866-313-6901
- Wisely Direct: 1-866-313-9029
- Wisely Cash: 1-877-431-5860
If you’re not sure which version you have, check the front of your card or open the myWisely app. The branding and your cardholder agreement will indicate whether you have Pay, Direct, or Cash.
When you call, a representative will walk you through the cancellation. Have your card number handy and be prepared to verify your identity with personal details like your name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Ask the representative to confirm that any remaining balance will be sent to you and request written or emailed confirmation that the account is closed.
Check for Pending Transactions
Before you close the account, make sure no deposits or payments are still pending. If your employer pays you through direct deposit onto the Wisely card, switch your payroll to a different account before closing. Talk to your employer’s HR or payroll department to update your direct deposit information, and give it at least one full pay cycle to confirm the change has taken effect.
Also look for any recurring charges tied to the card, like subscriptions or automatic bill payments. If those transactions hit after the account is closed, they’ll be declined, which could result in missed payments or service interruptions on those accounts. Update your payment method with each merchant before calling to close.
What Happens After Closure
Once the account is closed, the physical card is deactivated and can no longer be used for purchases, ATM withdrawals, or transfers. If there was a small residual balance at the time of closure, the representative should arrange for those funds to be sent to you, typically by check or transfer. Ask about this explicitly during your call so nothing falls through the cracks.
If you later need another Wisely card because a new employer offers one, you would set up a fresh account at that point. Closing an existing Wisely account does not prevent you from opening a new one in the future.
