Your American Express account number is a 15-digit number printed on the front of your physical card, and it always starts with “37” or “34.” If you don’t have your physical card handy, you can also find it through the Amex app or by logging into your account online. Here’s exactly where to look depending on your situation.
On Your Physical Card
American Express cards display the 15-digit account number on the front face. On most cards, the number is embossed (raised) into the plastic or metal. Look for the long number running across the card. If the number starts with 37 or 34, you’re looking at the right thing.
Your 4-digit Card Identification Number (CID), which works like the CVV on Visa or Mastercard, is printed separately on the front of the card, typically above and to the right of the main account number. It’s hot-stamped rather than embossed, so it sits flat against the card surface. You’ll need this CID for online purchases, but it’s not the same as your account number.
In the Amex App
If your physical card isn’t nearby, open the American Express app on your phone. Your Digital Card lives inside the app and displays your full card number. Tap on the Digital Card section to view and copy your details. The app requires you to be logged in, and the security code (CVV) shown on your Digital Card refreshes every time you log in and again every five minutes, so it won’t match the CID printed on your physical card. Your actual 15-digit account number, however, stays the same.
If you’ve recently switched phones, American Express will run extra security checks before letting you see your Digital Card again. You may need to verify your identity through a text message, email, or phone call before the number appears.
On the Amex Website
Log into your account at americanexpress.com. Once you’re on your account dashboard, you can view your card details. The site typically shows the last five digits of your account number on the main screen, and you can access the full number through your account settings or card management options. You’ll likely need to verify your identity before the full number is revealed.
Right After Approval
If you were just approved for a new American Express card and haven’t received the physical card yet, you may be able to get your card number instantly. When eligible, Amex will invite you to view your new card number right after approval. You can then add that number to Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, PayPal, or Amazon and start using it immediately.
There are a couple of limitations with instant card numbers. In some cases, if Amex can’t verify your identity instantly, you may only be able to use the number at select merchants until the physical card arrives. You also may not have access to your full credit line until you confirm receipt of your physical card.
For Amex Checking or Savings Accounts
If you’re looking for a bank account number rather than a credit card number, the process is different. Your Amex Rewards Checking account number and routing number are not the same as any card number. To find them, log into your Rewards Checking account online and look for “Your Checking Account Details” on the Home tab. You can also go to the Account Services tab and select “Set up Direct Deposit” to view both your account and routing numbers. These are the numbers you’ll need for direct deposit, wire transfers, or linking to external accounts.
On a Previous Statement
Your full 15-digit account number also appears on your monthly statements. If you receive paper statements, check the top of any recent one. For digital statements, log into your Amex account online or in the app and pull up a recent billing statement. The account number will be printed near the top of the document. This can be a useful backup if you’re having trouble accessing your card details through the app or website.
