Your Venmo account number and routing number are found in the app’s Direct Deposit settings. Venmo assigns you a unique account number and a shared routing number that work like a traditional bank account for receiving direct deposits, tax refunds, or other electronic transfers. Here’s exactly how to find them and what you need to know before you can.
Steps to Find Your Account Number
Open the Venmo app and follow this path:
- Tap the Me tab (your picture or initials in the bottom right)
- Tap the Settings gear in the top right corner
- Tap Direct Deposit
- Tap Show Account Number
You’ll see both your account number and routing number on this screen. You can copy each one directly from the app and paste them into your employer’s direct deposit form, a tax filing, or any other service requesting bank account details.
This feature is only available in the Venmo mobile app. You won’t find it on the Venmo website, so you’ll need your phone to access these numbers.
Identity Verification May Be Required First
Venmo won’t generate an account and routing number for you until your identity is verified. If you’ve already gone through this process (for instance, to send larger payments or use a Venmo debit card), you’re set. If not, you’ll need to verify before the Direct Deposit option appears.
To start verification, go to the Me tab, tap the Settings gear, then tap Identity Verification. Venmo will ask for your legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, and home address. In many cases, the system verifies this information automatically. If it can’t, you’ll be asked to upload documents. Acceptable forms of ID include a U.S. passport, driver’s license, or government-issued ID. For address proof, Venmo accepts utility bills, bank statements, a lease agreement, or a W-2, all dated within the past 12 months. Document review can take up to three business days, so plan ahead if you need the numbers for an upcoming payroll deadline.
Your Debit Card Number Is Different
If you searched for your Venmo “account number” because you need the 16-digit card number for online purchases, that’s a separate thing. The account and routing numbers described above are for bank-style transfers like direct deposit. Your Venmo Debit Card number is what you’d use to buy something online or in a store wherever Mastercard is accepted.
To view your debit card details, go to the Cards tab in the app, select your Venmo Debit Card, and tap View next to “Debit Card Details.” You’ll see the full card number, expiration date, and CVV. Venmo requires you to have a passcode or biometric unlock (Face ID, fingerprint) enabled before it will display these details, so you may be prompted to set that up first.
Using Your Venmo Account Number
Once you have your account and routing numbers, you can use them the same way you’d use traditional checking account details. The most common uses are setting up direct deposit with your employer, receiving government payments like tax refunds, and routing transfers from other financial institutions into your Venmo balance.
Keep in mind that these numbers are tied to your personal Venmo profile. If you also run a Venmo business profile, that profile doesn’t have its own separate login or distinct banking credentials. You access your business profile by switching from your personal account within the app, and any direct deposit or account number features are managed through your personal account settings.
What to Do If You Don’t See Direct Deposit
If you tap through Settings and don’t see a Direct Deposit option at all, the most likely reason is that your identity hasn’t been verified yet. Complete the verification steps described above and check back once approved. Less commonly, Venmo may restrict the feature for accounts that are very new or flagged for additional review. In that case, check your email and in-app notifications for any requests from Venmo, as they may need you to resubmit a document or confirm additional information before unlocking full account features.
