How to Get Money From Cash App: All Your Options

You can get money from Cash App by transferring your balance to a bank account, withdrawing cash at an ATM, or receiving payments from other people. The method you choose determines how fast you get the money and what fees you’ll pay. Here’s how each option works.

Transfer Your Balance to a Bank Account

The most common way to get money out of Cash App is cashing out to a linked bank account or debit card. Open the app, tap your balance on the home screen, then tap “Cash Out.” You’ll choose how much to transfer and pick one of two speeds.

Standard transfers are free and usually arrive within one to three business days. This is the best option when you’re not in a rush, since there’s no cost at all.

Instant transfers send the money immediately to your linked debit card and charge a fee of 0.5% to 2.5% of the transfer amount. The minimum fee ranges from $0.25 to $1, and the maximum is capped at $75. Cash App shows you the exact fee before you confirm, so you’ll know the cost up front. If you’re moving $200 and the fee is 1.5%, you’d pay $3 to get your money right away.

To use either option, you need a bank account or debit card linked to your Cash App profile. You can add one through the app’s banking tab. Standard transfers work with bank accounts, while instant transfers require a debit card.

Withdraw Cash at an ATM

If you have a Cash App Card (the free Visa debit card you can order through the app), you can withdraw physical cash at any ATM that accepts Visa. You can also get cash back at store checkout counters using the same card.

The weekly withdrawal limit is $1,000, and it resets every Saturday at 7 PM Eastern. Cash-back transactions at stores count toward that same $1,000 weekly cap, so keep that in mind if you use both methods in the same week. ATM operators may charge their own fees on top of anything Cash App charges, and those vary by machine.

If you don’t already have a Cash App Card, you can request one inside the app. It typically arrives by mail within two weeks. Until it arrives, you’ll need to use bank transfers to access your money.

Receive Money from Other People

Getting paid by another Cash App user is straightforward. There are a few ways someone can send you money:

  • $Cashtag: Your unique username (like $JaneDoe) that anyone can use to find and pay you.
  • Phone number or email: The sender can enter the phone number or email address tied to your account instead of your Cashtag.
  • QR code: You can share your personal QR code, which the sender scans to pull up your profile and send a payment.

You can also request money directly. Go to the Payments tab (the dollar sign icon), enter the amount, tap “Request,” and type in the other person’s Cashtag, phone number, or email. They’ll get a notification and can approve the request with one tap. You can do this on the app or through cash.app on a desktop browser.

When someone sends you money, it lands in your Cash App balance instantly. From there, you can spend it with your Cash App Card, transfer it to your bank, or leave it in the app for later.

Add Cash to Your Balance at a Store

While this is technically putting money into Cash App rather than getting it out, many people search for this when they want to load cash onto their account so they can use it digitally. You can deposit paper money at a wide range of retail stores, including major chains like Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, 7-Eleven, and Walmart (at the customer service desk or MoneyCenter).

To deposit, open Cash App, tap “Paper Money” from the banking section, and generate a barcode. Show the barcode to the cashier along with your cash. Some retailers also let you swipe your Cash App Card instead of using a barcode. Cash App charges a flat $1 processing fee per deposit, which is deducted from the amount you hand over.

Which Method Is Fastest

If speed is your priority, instant transfer to a debit card is the quickest way to move your Cash App balance into a usable bank account. ATM withdrawals are equally fast for physical cash, assuming you already have a Cash App Card. Standard bank transfers are the slowest option but cost nothing.

For small amounts where the fee would be minimal, instant transfer is usually worth the convenience. For larger transfers where 1% to 2.5% starts adding up, the free standard transfer saves real money. On a $1,000 transfer, that fee could run anywhere from $5 to $25.
