How to Put Money on Cash App: Cards, Cash & More

You can add money to Cash App in about 30 seconds by tapping the Money tab, selecting “Add money,” entering an amount, and confirming with your linked debit card or bank account. That’s the fastest method, but it’s not the only one. You can also deposit physical cash at thousands of retail stores or use your phone’s camera to deposit a check directly into your balance.

Add Money From a Linked Debit Card or Bank Account

This is the most common way to fund your Cash App balance, and it works instantly in most cases. Here’s the process:

  • Tap the Money tab on your Cash App home screen
  • Press Add money
  • Choose the amount you want to add
  • Select your payment method (your linked debit card or bank account)
  • Confirm with your PIN or biometrics (Face ID, fingerprint)

If you haven’t linked a funding source yet, you’ll need to do that first. Go to your profile, tap “Linked Banks,” and follow the prompts to connect a debit card or checking account. Credit cards generally can’t be used to load your Cash App balance.

Transfers from a debit card typically land in your balance right away. Bank account transfers can take one to three business days, depending on your bank.

Deposit Physical Cash at a Store

If you have paper money you want to put on Cash App, you can walk into a participating retailer and deposit it. Cash App supports deposits at a wide range of stores, including Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, 7-Eleven, Walmart, Kroger, Sheetz, and many regional grocery and convenience chains.

There are two ways the deposit works at the register. Some stores let you swipe your Cash Card or scan a barcode from the app. Others only accept the barcode method. To generate your barcode, open Cash App, go to the Money tab, and look for the option to deposit cash. Show the barcode to the cashier, hand them your bills, and the funds load to your balance.

Cash App charges a flat $1 processing fee per deposit, which is subtracted automatically from the amount you hand over. So if you deposit $50, your balance receives $49. That fee is waived if you have Green Status, which Cash App grants to users who meet certain activity thresholds. At Walmart specifically, you’ll need to visit the customer service desk or MoneyCenter rather than a regular checkout lane.

Deposit a Check Using Your Phone

Cash App offers mobile check deposit for eligible users. You can deposit paychecks, personal checks, cashier’s checks, and government-issued checks by photographing them with your phone’s camera.

Before you snap the photo, endorse the check properly. Using blue or black ink, sign the back and write “Cash App Deposit” under your signature. The check must be less than 180 days old and clearly legible. Skipping the endorsement or writing it incorrectly can delay processing or cause the deposit to fail entirely.

Funds from check deposits generally arrive within six business days, though many clear sooner. In some cases it can take up to eight business days. Business days exclude weekends and bank holidays, so a check deposited on a Friday afternoon may not fully clear until the following week.

Not every Cash App user has access to mobile check deposit. Cash App rolls out the feature based on account eligibility, so if you don’t see the option in your app, you may need to verify your identity or wait until the feature becomes available to your account.

Account Limits to Know About

How much money you can hold in Cash App depends on whether you’ve verified your identity. Unverified accounts have a balance limit of $1,000. Once you verify, which involves providing your full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number, your balance limit becomes unlimited.

Verification also unlocks higher sending and receiving limits. If you plan to use Cash App for anything beyond small, occasional transfers, completing verification upfront saves you from running into caps at inconvenient moments. The process takes just a few minutes inside the app under your profile settings.

Receiving Money From Other People

The simplest way to “put money on” Cash App is to have someone send it to you. When another Cash App user sends you a payment, it lands in your balance immediately. You can also share your $cashtag (your unique Cash App username) or a QR code so people can find and pay you without exchanging phone numbers.

If someone sends you money and you’d rather have it in your bank account than sitting in your Cash App balance, you can cash out. Standard transfers to your bank are free and take one to three business days. Instant transfers to a linked debit card arrive in seconds but carry a small fee.
