How to Refund or Cancel a Cash App Payment

Cash App payments are instant, so most completed transfers can’t be canceled or reversed by the sender. To get your money back, you typically need the recipient to issue a refund, or you need to dispute the transaction through Cash App support. The exact process depends on whether you sent money to another person, paid a merchant, or used your Cash App Card.

Cancel a Payment Before It Completes

Cash App to Cash App payments process almost instantly, which means the window to cancel is extremely small. Still, it’s worth checking. Open your Activity feed and tap the payment in question. If the transaction hasn’t fully completed, you may see a cancel option on the receipt screen. Tap it and confirm. If no cancel button appears, the payment has already gone through and you’ll need to pursue a refund instead.

Ask the Recipient to Refund You

For person-to-person payments, the fastest path to getting your money back is asking the recipient to refund you directly through the app. The recipient needs to:

  • Tap the Activity tab on their Cash App home screen
  • Select the payment in question
  • Tap the three-dot menu
  • Select Refund, then press OK to confirm

If you paid from your Cash App balance, the refund generally returns instantly to that same balance. If the original payment came from a linked debit or credit card, the refund typically takes up to 5 business days to appear on your card statement.

When the recipient won’t cooperate or isn’t responding, you can use the Request button on your Cash App home screen to formally ask for the funds back. This sends them a payment request notification. It doesn’t force a refund, but it creates a clear record and sometimes prompts a response.

Get a Refund From a Merchant

If you paid a business using Cash App Pay or your Cash App Card, the refund process works differently. You can’t refund yourself through the app. Instead, you need to contact the merchant directly and ask them to process the return.

Once a merchant initiates a refund on a completed transaction, it can take up to 10 business days (about 14 calendar days) for Cash App to receive and process it. After Cash App receives it, the funds may sit in a brief processing state, usually lasting anywhere from 24 hours to one week, which you can track in your Activity tab.

If the refund hasn’t appeared after 10 business days, reach out to the merchant again to confirm they actually processed it before contacting Cash App support. If you need documentation for the merchant or your own records, you can download a transaction history by logging into cash.app/account, selecting Activity on the left, and clicking the CSV button next to the search bar.

Dispute a Cash App Card Transaction

When a merchant won’t issue a refund, or you notice an unauthorized charge on your Cash App Card, you can file a formal dispute. This is Cash App’s process for investigating transactions that were fraudulent, incorrect, or never delivered as promised. You should file a dispute within 60 days of receiving the monthly statement that includes the transaction.

To file a dispute in the app:

  • Tap your profile icon and select Support
  • Choose Cash App Card, then Dispute a purchase
  • Select Start a dispute and follow the prompts

If you’d rather handle it by phone, call Cash App support at 1 (800) 969-1940. The line is available daily from 8 AM to 9:30 PM EST.

After you submit a dispute, Cash App’s team investigates and sends an update by email and in-app notification within 10 business days. If they can’t wrap up the investigation in that window, they’ll issue a provisional credit to your account so you’re not stuck waiting for your money. The full investigation can take up to 45 days.

What to Do if You Sent Money to the Wrong Person

Sending money to the wrong $cashtag or phone number is one of the most common reasons people search for refund help. Because payments are instant, Cash App can’t reverse them on your behalf. Your options are to ask that person to refund the payment (using the steps above) or send a payment request through the app.

If the recipient ignores your request and the amount is significant, filing a dispute through Cash App support is your next step. Be prepared to explain the situation and provide details about the intended recipient versus the actual one. There’s no guarantee of recovery when money is sent to a real account voluntarily, but documenting the mistake strengthens your case.

To reduce the risk of misdirected payments in the future, double-check the recipient’s name and profile photo before confirming any transfer. Cash App displays these details on the confirmation screen for exactly this reason.
