How to Return a Mattress to Costco: In-Store & Online

Costco accepts mattress returns at any time, with no strict deadline, under its satisfaction guarantee. You don’t need the original packaging or even the receipt. Here’s how the process works depending on whether you bought the mattress in a warehouse or online.

Returning a Mattress Bought In-Store

Bring the mattress to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse. You’ll need your Costco membership card so staff can look up the purchase. Having the original receipt speeds things up, but it isn’t required. Costco can pull your transaction history using your membership number.

Original packaging also isn’t necessary. Costco’s own return policy notes that the original product packaging “may not be necessary to process your return.” For a mattress that’s been slept on for weeks or months, this is especially relevant since most people discard the box and plastic wrap shortly after delivery. Just load the mattress into your vehicle and bring it in as-is.

At the counter, a staff member will process the return and issue your refund. If you paid with a debit or credit card, the refund goes back to that card. If you paid cash, you’ll typically receive cash back. Costco doesn’t charge restocking fees on mattresses.

Returning a Mattress Bought on Costco.com

If you ordered the mattress through Costco’s website, you have two options: return it to a warehouse in person (same process as above) or arrange a pickup through Costco.com. To start an online return, log into your Costco.com account, go to your order history, and select the mattress order. From there you can request a return and schedule a freight pickup.

Since mattresses are large items, Costco arranges for a carrier to come to your home. You won’t need to haul it anywhere yourself. Once the carrier picks up the mattress, Costco issues the refund within about two business days. Some orders may require an additional three to five business days for verification before the refund is finalized.

How and When You’ll Get Your Money Back

The refund method matches how you originally paid. If you used a credit or debit card, the refund posts to your card statement on a timeline set by your bank or card issuer, typically a few business days after Costco processes it. If you paid by check, expect to receive a refund check in the mail within 15 business days.

If you used a Costco Shop Card, the original card gets reloaded within 48 hours. If Costco can’t reload that specific card for any reason, they’ll send a new Digital Shop Card to your email within one to two business days.

No Time Limit, but Use Common Sense

Costco’s return policy on mattresses has no stated deadline. Unlike electronics, which must be returned within 90 days, mattresses fall under the general satisfaction guarantee with no expiration. This means you could technically return a mattress months after purchase if you’re genuinely unsatisfied with it.

That said, Costco tracks return activity through your membership account. The company reserves the right to cancel a membership if it believes the return policy is being abused. Returning a mattress after a reasonable trial period because it’s uncomfortable or causing back pain is perfectly normal. Returning one every few months is the kind of pattern that could draw attention.

What to Bring

  • Membership card: Required for any in-warehouse return so staff can verify the purchase.
  • Receipt: Helpful but not required. Your membership number ties to your full purchase history.
  • Original packaging: Not required. Bring the mattress however you can transport it.
  • The mattress itself: For in-store returns, you need to physically bring it to the warehouse. For online orders, you can schedule a home pickup instead.

Mattresses Bought Through Costco’s Delivery Partners

Some mattresses sold at Costco, particularly higher-end or specialty brands, ship directly from the manufacturer. These still fall under Costco’s return policy since you purchased through Costco. If you’re unsure whether to return through the warehouse or through Costco.com, calling Costco’s customer service line or starting a return request online will clarify which process applies to your specific order. In either case, you won’t be directed to deal with the manufacturer separately.
