You can list and sell used books on Amazon without paying a monthly subscription by using the Individual seller plan, which has no upfront or recurring fees. You will, however, pay per-item and referral fees when a book actually sells, so “free” means free to start and list, not completely free of cost at the point of sale. Here’s how to set it up and what to expect at every step.
Sign Up for the Individual Seller Plan
Amazon offers two seller tiers. The Professional plan costs $39.99 per month whether you sell anything or not. The Individual plan charges nothing monthly and instead takes $0.99 per item sold. If you’re clearing out a personal collection or testing the waters with a small number of books, the Individual plan lets you list as many titles as you want without spending a dime until something sells.
To register, go to sell.amazon.com and choose “Sign up” under the Individual plan. You’ll need a valid bank account for deposits, a credit card on file, government-issued ID, and tax information (your Social Security number or EIN). Amazon may take a day or two to verify your identity before your account is fully active.
What You’ll Pay When a Book Sells
Listing is free, but three fees come out of your proceeds once a buyer places an order:
- Per-item fee: $0.99, charged on every sale under the Individual plan.
- Referral fee: 15% of the total sale price (including any shipping the buyer pays). Books fall under Amazon’s “Books, Music, Video, DVD” category, which carries a flat 15% referral fee with a minimum of $0.30.
- Variable closing fee: Amazon charges an additional closing fee on media items, including books. This is deducted automatically alongside the referral fee.
So if you sell a used book for $10, you’ll lose $0.99 plus 15% of the sale price plus the closing fee before the remaining balance hits your bank account. There’s no way to avoid these transaction fees on Amazon, but since none of them require money out of pocket before a sale, your startup cost is genuinely zero.
How to List a Used Book
Most used books are already in Amazon’s catalog, which makes listing simple. From your Seller Central dashboard, search for the book by title, author, or ISBN (the 10- or 13-digit number on the back cover or copyright page). Once you find the correct listing, click “Sell this product” and fill in the details.
The most important field is condition. Amazon’s condition grades for used books are “Like New,” “Very Good,” “Good,” and “Acceptable.” Be honest. A book with highlighting throughout or a cracked spine is “Acceptable” at best. Overstating condition leads to returns, negative reviews, and potential account warnings. Use the condition notes box to call out specifics: “Minor shelf wear on cover, no markings inside” tells buyers exactly what they’re getting and reduces the chance of a return.
Price your book competitively by checking what other used copies in the same condition are listed for. If five other sellers have “Good” condition copies at $6, listing yours at $12 won’t generate a sale. You can adjust your price at any time from Seller Central.
Shipping Books Yourself
On the Individual plan, you’ll ship books directly to buyers (called merchant fulfillment). When a customer orders your book, Amazon gives you a shipping credit to offset your postage costs. For books, the standard shipping credit is $3.99, expedited is $6.99, and two-day is $14.95.
That credit often covers the actual cost of shipping a single book via the postal service using a padded mailer or media mail, though heavier or oversized books can cost more to ship than the credit provides. If you find the credit doesn’t fully cover your postage, factor that gap into your listing price. For example, if shipping actually costs you $5.50 but the credit is $3.99, adding an extra $1.50 to your book’s price keeps you whole.
You’re expected to ship within two business days of receiving an order. Amazon emails you when a sale comes through, and you can print a packing slip from Seller Central. Use a tracking number whenever possible, because confirmed delivery protects you if a buyer claims the package never arrived. Padded envelopes or poly mailers work well for most paperbacks. Hardcovers or especially valuable books deserve a small box with some padding.
Choosing Which Books Are Worth Listing
Not every used book is worth selling on Amazon. After fees, a book priced below $4 or $5 will net you almost nothing once the $0.99 per-item fee, the 15% referral fee, and shipping costs are subtracted. Before listing, scan the book’s ISBN on Amazon and look at what used copies are currently selling for. If the lowest “Good” condition copy is listed at $1.50, your profit after fees will be negative or negligible.
Books that tend to sell well include college textbooks (especially recent editions), nonfiction titles on specialized topics, out-of-print books with steady demand, and recent bestsellers in good shape. Mass-market paperbacks and outdated editions of frequently revised textbooks are usually not worth the trouble. Spend a few minutes checking prices before you invest time photographing and listing. If a book won’t earn you at least a few dollars after all fees, consider donating it or selling it in a local bundle instead.
Managing Your Listings and Getting Paid
Amazon deposits your earnings to the bank account you registered during signup. For Individual sellers, disbursements typically happen every two weeks. You can track pending payments, completed orders, and any fees charged in the “Payments” section of Seller Central.
Keep an eye on your seller metrics. Amazon monitors your order defect rate, late shipment rate, and cancellation rate. If any of these climb too high, your account can be suspended. Ship on time, describe condition accurately, and respond to buyer messages within 24 hours. For a casual seller moving a few dozen books, staying in good standing is straightforward as long as you treat each order like it matters.
If a book hasn’t sold after a few weeks, consider lowering the price. Amazon’s marketplace is competitive, and other sellers may undercut you over time. You can also delete listings at any time with no penalty if you decide to sell or donate a book elsewhere.
