How to Send Money on Revolut: Limits, Fees & Tips

Sending money on Revolut takes about 30 seconds once you know where to tap. You can send to other Revolut users for free, transfer to external bank accounts in over 160 countries, or create a payment link for someone who doesn’t have the app. Here’s how each method works.

Sending Money to Another Revolut User

Transfers between Revolut accounts are instant and free, regardless of currency. To send money to someone who also uses Revolut:

  • Open the app and tap Payments on the bottom menu
  • Tap the plus sign in the top-right corner
  • Select the recipient by searching their name, phone number, or Revtag (their unique Revolut username)
  • Enter the amount and choose the currency
  • Review the details and tap Send

If the person is in your phone contacts and has a Revolut account linked to that number, they’ll appear automatically. The money lands in their account within seconds.

Sending to a Bank Account

You can also send money from Revolut to any standard bank account. The steps are similar but require a bit more information about the recipient.

  • Tap Payments, then the plus sign in the top-right corner
  • Select Bank or International, depending on where the recipient’s account is located
  • Enter the recipient’s name, account number, and routing details
  • Type the amount and select the currency you want the recipient to receive
  • Add a reference if needed (the field appears below the amount)
  • Review the fee breakdown the app displays, then confirm

One detail that trips people up: the recipient’s address must be a physical street address. Revolut does not support PO boxes for outbound transfers.

If you’re sending to a domestic account in USD, Revolut doesn’t charge a transfer fee. Wire transfers, however, carry a $10 fee. For international transfers, fees vary by destination and currency, but the app shows you the exact cost before you confirm. Paid plan subscribers (Premium and Metal) get discounts on international transfer fees.

How Currency Exchange Fees Work

When you send money in a different currency than you hold, Revolut converts it automatically at the interbank exchange rate, which is the rate banks use when trading with each other. That’s typically better than what traditional banks or money-transfer services offer. But there are a few cost layers to understand.

On the Standard (free) plan, you can exchange up to $1,000 per rolling month with no added fee. After that, Revolut charges a 0.5% markup on each exchange. Premium plan holders get that same no-fee window up to $10,000, and Metal plan holders pay no exchange markup at all.

Timing matters too. If you send money between 5:00 p.m. Friday and 6:00 p.m. Sunday (Eastern Time), when foreign exchange markets are closed, Standard plan users pay a 1% fee on the conversion. Premium and Metal customers are exempt from this weekend surcharge. So if you’re on the free plan and sending a large amount in a foreign currency, doing it on a weekday can save you real money.

Creating a Payment Link

If the person you’re paying (or requesting money from) doesn’t have Revolut, you can generate a Revolut.me payment link. This lets them pay you directly from a debit or credit card without downloading anything.

  • Tap Payments, then the plus sign
  • Select Create a payment link
  • Choose whether to request a specific amount or share a generic link that lets the sender type in any amount
  • Send the link through text, email, or any messaging app

There are limits on incoming card payments through these links: roughly £250 per week (or the equivalent in your currency), with a cap of 20 completed payments per week and 40 per month. Payments sent from another Revolut account through the link don’t count toward these card-based caps.

Transfer Limits

Revolut doesn’t cap how many transfers you can make, but individual transactions do have size limits that vary by currency. The app displays the applicable limit before you send, so you’ll know right away if a transfer is too large. For context, transfers in British pounds to UK accounts cap at £250,000 per transaction.

Some destination countries have notably lower per-transaction ceilings due to local regulations. If you’re sending a large sum to a country with a tight limit, you may need to split it across multiple transfers. The key thing is to check the in-app breakdown before confirming, since a transfer that exceeds the limit will simply fail.

Tips for Faster, Cheaper Transfers

If the recipient can sign up for Revolut, you’ll avoid all transfer fees entirely. Even for international payments, a Revolut-to-Revolut transfer is free and instant, which makes it worth suggesting if you regularly send money to the same person.

For bank transfers, double-check the recipient’s details carefully. A wrong account number or mismatched name can delay or bounce the transfer, and correcting it after the fact is slow. Adding a reference is optional but helpful if the recipient needs to match the payment to an invoice or bill.

Finally, keep your exchange volume in mind. If you’re on the Standard plan and approaching your $1,000 monthly exchange threshold, you can monitor your usage in the app. Upgrading to Premium may pay for itself if you regularly convert more than a few thousand dollars a month, since the higher threshold and waived weekend fees add up quickly.
