How to Turn Off Auto Pay on Zip and Pay Manually

Zip doesn’t offer a simple “turn off autopay” toggle in its app or website. The service is designed to automatically charge your payment method on file for each scheduled installment, and there’s no setting to switch that off. However, you can control how and where those charges land by managing your payment methods or updating the card tied to a specific order.

Why There’s No Autopay Toggle

Zip’s buy now, pay later model works by automatically deducting installment payments from your stored card or bank account on scheduled due dates. This automatic billing is built into how the service operates, not an optional feature you opted into. When you made a purchase with Zip, you agreed to let Zip pull payments on a set schedule. That means there’s no on/off switch buried in your settings.

If you want to stop Zip from charging a particular card, your options are to swap the card on your account, change the card tied to a specific order, or remove the card entirely (with some restrictions).

Change the Card on a Specific Order

If you want to redirect where Zip pulls payments for an existing purchase, you can update the card at the order level. Log into the Zip customer portal and select “Orders” at the top of the page. Choose the order you want to update. In the Order Details section on the right side, find “Payment Card” and click “Edit.” Then select “Use this card” next to whichever card you’d like Zip to charge for the remaining installments on that order.

This is the most targeted approach. It doesn’t cancel or pause the payments, but it lets you move them to a different card, which is useful if you’re trying to protect a specific bank account from being debited.

Remove a Payment Method

You can delete a card from your Zip account entirely, which prevents Zip from charging it going forward. In the Zip app, tap the Profile icon in the top right corner, then select “Manage Zip account.” Choose the account you want to update, tap “Payment methods,” then tap the three dots next to the card you want to remove and select “Remove this payment method.”

There are two important restrictions here. First, you can’t remove your only payment method. At least one valid card or bank account must stay on file. Second, you can’t remove your default card if it’s tied to an open Zip order. You’ll need to set a different card as your default before you can delete the old one.

What Happens If a Payment Fails

If you remove a card or let a payment fail without having a valid backup method, Zip won’t just skip the installment. You’ll still owe it, and late fees kick in seven days after the due date. The exact fee depends on your Zip product: $7.50 for Zip Pay, or $15 for Zip Plus and Zip Money. These fees are charged per missed payment cycle, so they can add up quickly if you leave things unresolved.

Removing your card doesn’t cancel your debt or pause your payment schedule. It just means the automatic charge will fail, and you’ll be on the hook for the missed amount plus the late fee.

If You Want to Pay Manually Instead

Some people searching for “turn off autopay” really want the option to make payments on their own schedule rather than having Zip pull money automatically. Zip doesn’t support this for standard installment orders. The installments are fixed to specific dates and are automatically charged. Your best option is to make sure the card on file has sufficient funds before each due date, or to pay off the remaining balance early through the app to close out the order before the next automatic charge hits.

Paying early on an order eliminates future scheduled charges for that purchase. If you have the funds available, this is the cleanest way to stop autopay from pulling on a specific order.
