Is Humana Commercial Insurance or Medicare-Focused?

Humana is primarily a government-sponsored health insurance company, not a commercial medical insurer. In February 2023, Humana announced it would exit the employer-based medical insurance business over 18 to 24 months, shifting its focus almost entirely to Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and other government programs. However, Humana does still sell commercial dental, vision, and life insurance to employer groups and individuals, which can create confusion about where the company fits.

Why Humana Left Employer Medical Insurance

Humana made the decision to stop offering medical insurance to employer groups so it could concentrate on government-sponsored plans, where the company has its largest membership and deepest expertise. The exit was announced in early 2023 with an 18- to 24-month wind-down period, meaning employer medical contracts were not renewed as they expired. By mid-2025, Humana’s commercial medical book of business had largely run off.

This means if your employer used to offer a Humana medical plan, that coverage has either already ended or transitioned to another insurer. Humana no longer competes for new employer group medical contracts.

What Humana Focuses on Now

Humana’s core business revolves around government health programs. The biggest piece is Medicare Advantage, the privately administered alternative to Original Medicare for people 65 and older or those with qualifying disabilities. Humana is one of the largest Medicare Advantage carriers in the country, offering HMO, PPO, and Special Needs Plans for people with chronic conditions or those dually eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Humana also operates Medicaid managed care plans in several states, covering low-income individuals and families through contracts with state governments. Additionally, Humana runs primary care centers and worksite medical facilities as part of its broader health services strategy.

Commercial Products Humana Still Offers

Even though Humana exited commercial medical insurance, it continues to sell several types of commercial coverage to employers and individuals:

  • Group dental plans: Available in most states through employer-sponsored benefits, offered through multiple Humana subsidiaries.
  • Group vision plans: Also available in most states through employers, covering routine eye exams and eyewear.
  • Group life insurance: Employer-sponsored life coverage offered through Humana Insurance Company.
  • Individual dental, vision, and hearing plans: Standalone plans available directly to individuals and families outside of employer groups.

So if you see Humana listed as an option through your employer’s benefits enrollment, it is likely for dental, vision, or life coverage rather than medical insurance. These specialty benefit lines were not part of the commercial exit.

Individual Medical Plans on the ACA Marketplace

Humana does not currently sell individual or family medical plans on the Affordable Care Act marketplace exchanges. Its individual product offerings are limited to standalone dental, vision, and hearing plans. If you are shopping for individual health insurance through healthcare.gov or a state exchange, Humana will not appear as an option for medical coverage.

What This Means If You’re Comparing Insurers

If you are looking for commercial medical insurance, whether through an employer or on the individual market, Humana is not in that space. You would need to look at carriers like UnitedHealthcare, Anthem (Elevance Health), Aetna (CVS Health), Cigna, or Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in your area.

If you are turning 65 or already on Medicare, Humana is one of the most prominent options for Medicare Advantage coverage. And if your employer offers Humana dental or vision, those products remain active and widely available. The key distinction is that Humana’s medical insurance is now exclusively tied to government programs, while its commercial presence is limited to specialty benefits like dental, vision, and life insurance.
