Yes, USPS Ground Advantage includes free tracking on every package. When you ship with Ground Advantage, you automatically get a tracking number that lets you and your recipient follow the package from drop-off to delivery. There’s no extra fee and no need to add tracking as a separate service.
What Tracking Shows You
Every Ground Advantage shipment gets a unique tracking number, which you can use on the USPS website, the USPS mobile app, or by calling USPS directly. The tracking updates show key milestones along the way: when USPS accepts the package, when it arrives at and departs from sorting facilities, when it’s out for delivery, and when it’s been delivered. You’ll also see an expected delivery date, which USPS calculates based on the origin, destination, and current network conditions.
Tracking updates aren’t always instant. Packages sometimes sit at a facility for hours before the next scan registers, so a gap between updates doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Most packages show several scans throughout their journey, but the frequency depends on how many facilities the package passes through.
How To Track a Ground Advantage Package
If you shipped the package, your tracking number appears on the receipt (for counter drop-offs) or in your shipping confirmation (if you bought postage online through USPS.com, PayPal, or a third-party shipping platform like Pirateship or Stamps.com). If you’re the recipient, the sender can share the tracking number with you directly, or you can sign up for USPS Informed Delivery to get automatic notifications about incoming packages.
To check the status, go to usps.com/tracking and enter the number. The results page shows every recorded scan event in reverse chronological order, along with the estimated delivery date. You can also sign up for text or email alerts so you don’t have to keep refreshing the page.
Delivery Window and Timeframes
Ground Advantage packages typically arrive in 2 to 5 business days. That window is an estimate, not a guarantee. Shipments to Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, and offshore destinations may take longer. The same applies to packages containing hazardous materials or live animals, which follow slower handling procedures.
Because the delivery window isn’t guaranteed, tracking becomes especially useful for managing expectations. If a package is taking longer than the estimated date, the tracking history will usually show where it’s sitting and whether it’s still moving through the system.
PO Boxes and Military Addresses
Ground Advantage works for delivery to PO Boxes, which is a significant advantage over many private carrier services that only deliver to street addresses. Tracking functions the same way for PO Box deliveries, though the final scan may simply show “delivered” rather than specifying the box number.
For military addresses (APO, FPO, and DPO), USPS is the only carrier that delivers to these locations. Tracking is available for military mail, but coverage can be less detailed once a package leaves the domestic postal network and enters the military postal system overseas. You’ll typically see scans through the U.S. portion of the journey, and the final delivery scan may come from the military post office at the destination. If a package shows as delivered but the recipient hasn’t received it, the Military Postal Service Agency coordinates with USPS to investigate.
Insurance Included With Tracking
Beyond tracking, Ground Advantage includes built-in insurance coverage at no extra cost. Packages shipped at the retail counter come with $100 of coverage, while commercial shippers (those using business accounts or online postage platforms) get $50. If your package is worth more than the included amount, you can purchase additional insurance up to $5,000 when you create the shipment. The tracking record serves as documentation if you ever need to file a claim, since it shows whether the package was delivered and when.
Ground Advantage vs. Other USPS Services
All current USPS package services include tracking. Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and Ground Advantage all come with tracking numbers that work the same way. The main differences are speed and included extras. Priority Mail typically delivers in 1 to 3 days and includes $100 of insurance for commercial shipments (compared to $50 for Ground Advantage commercial). Priority Mail Express adds a money-back delivery guarantee and up to $200 of included insurance. Ground Advantage is the most affordable option when you don’t need overnight or express speed, and the tracking experience is identical to the faster services.
If you previously used USPS Retail Ground, First-Class Package Service, or Parcel Select Ground, those have been consolidated into Ground Advantage. The tracking functionality carried over and, in most cases, improved with more consistent scan coverage across the network.
