The National Basketball Association is the pre-eminent men’s professional basketball league in North America. With 30 teams in the league, there are a lot of potential employers to choose from. However, landing an interview with an NBA team can be difficult.

One way to increase your chances of getting an interview is to be prepared with answers to common NBA interview questions. This guide will give you an overview of the types of questions you may be asked, as well as some sample answers to help you prepare for your interview.

NBA Interview Process

The interview process at NBA can vary depending on the position you are applying for. For front end developers, the process includes a home assignment, conversation on the home assignment, and background check. Product managers go through a 3 month interview process that includes meeting with each member of the team and one member of the L-team. The final interview for product managers is an in-depth case study in a basketball related topic.

For cashiers, sales associates, and stocking employees, the interview process is less formal and may just be a conversation with the hiring manager. Analytics managers have a short phone screening followed by a meeting with the hiring manager. The next step for analytics managers is a take home SQL assessment. For talent operations employees, the interview process includes three rounds with different members of the team.

Photo editors have a straightforward interview process that involves a couple of rounds between department heads. Motion design associates have an easy interview process that takes place over the course of a month. Software engineers have a recruiter call and screening followed by an interview with the developer lead. They are then given a take home coding assessment. Business operations senior analysts report having a quick interview process with the team being accommodating to their timeline.

1. Tell me about a time when you worked with a team and had to disagree on something.

This question can help an interviewer understand how you work with others and your ability to communicate effectively. Use examples from your past experience where you were able to disagree respectfully, explain why you disagreed and find a solution that worked for everyone involved.

Example: “In my last position as the head coach of a high school basketball team, I had a disagreement with one of my assistant coaches about our defensive strategy during games. We talked through our disagreements and decided to try both strategies in different situations throughout the season. In the end, we found that playing more conservatively helped us win more games.”

2. What is your experience working in sports?

This question is a great way to learn more about your potential new employer. It’s also an opportunity for you to show that you’re passionate about the sport and have some knowledge of the NBA.

Example: “I’m a huge fan of the Boston Celtics, as I grew up in Massachusetts. They’ve been my favorite team since I was a kid because they always seem to be competitive. I also love the Golden State Warriors because of their fast-paced offense. The Houston Rockets are another one of my favorites because of James Harden.”

6. Who are some of your role models in the NBA?

10. How well do you handle criticism? Can you give an example of a time where you received constructive criticism?
