4. How would you deal with an angry customer?

Example: “I once worked for a marketing agency where I was in charge of managing our clients’ accounts. One day, one of my clients called me because they were upset about a campaign we launched for them. They said that we didn’t do what we promised and wanted us to fix it immediately. I calmly listened to their concerns and asked questions to better understand what they were looking for. After talking with them, I realized that there was nothing wrong with the campaign but rather that they misunderstood some of the goals we set out to achieve. We then talked through the goals again and determined that we could make some adjustments to meet their expectations.”

5. At Optimizely we believe that every employee should be able to take initiative and make their own decisions without having to ask for permission. Can you give an example of a time where you made a decision on your own?

6. We are looking for someone who can work well in a team setting as well as independently. Give us an example of a time when you worked in both settings.

This question is a great way to show your ability to work in a team setting and also independently. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention how you worked with others and the steps you took to complete the task on your own.

Example: “In my last role as an online marketing specialist, I was tasked with creating a landing page that would increase sales for one of our clients. My manager and I decided to create two different variations of the landing page and split up the traffic evenly between them. After a week, we analyzed the results and found that one variation performed better than the other. We then used Optimizely to implement changes to the landing page that increased sales by 10%.”

7. Describe a time when you struggled to meet a deadline, what were the circumstances and how did you handle it?

8. What do you think makes a successful software engineer?

In your answer, explain what makes a successful software engineer and how you possess these qualities.

Example: “I think a successful software engineer needs to be highly organized and detail-oriented. Software engineers are responsible for creating complex programs that need to work correctly every time. I am very organized and enjoy working on projects where I can use my problem-solving skills to find solutions to challenging problems. I also like being able to create something new from scratch.”

9. What programming languages are you most familiar with?

This question is a great way to see if you have the necessary skills for the role. It also allows you to show your knowledge of programming languages and how they can be used in relation to Optimizely.

In one instance, my team was working on developing a new website for a client who sold handmade jewelry online. We asked our client what their customers wanted most from their website, and they said that they wanted more information about each piece of jewelry, including its history and inspiration. We implemented this feedback into the design of the website, which included detailed descriptions of each piece of jewelry.”

13. Why are you interested in joining Optimizely?

14. Tell us about a time when you had to present ideas to a group of people.

18. What are some of your favorite tech products and why?

Example: “I love my iPhone because I can do so many things on it, like surf the web, check email, take photos and even make phone calls. I also really enjoy using my laptop because it allows me to work from anywhere. I’ve used it while traveling, at coffee shops and in bed when I’m too tired to get up.”

19. What kind of metrics do you use to evaluate success?

This question is an opportunity to show your interviewer that you know how to measure success and determine what works best for a company. Use examples from previous projects where you used metrics to evaluate the success of a campaign or marketing plan.

Example: “I use several different metrics to evaluate success, including conversion rate, bounce rate, time on page, goal completions and customer satisfaction surveys. I find that these are all important factors in determining whether a campaign was successful or not. For example, if a website has a high bounce rate but a high conversion rate, it may be because users are finding exactly what they’re looking for quickly and leaving. However, if there’s a low conversion rate with a high bounce rate, then it may mean that users aren’t finding what they want.”

20. What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?

This question is a great way to see how ambitious the candidate is. It also shows you what they want to accomplish in their career and if they are willing to put in the work to get there. When answering this question, it’s important to be honest about your goals and show that you have plans for your future.

Example: “I hope to be working as an analytics manager at my current company by then. I would like to continue learning more about data analysis and testing so I can help optimize our website even further. I think I could make some really valuable contributions to the company over the next five years.”
