Police chiefs play a critical role in their communities, managing and directing the work of officers to ensure public safety. In order to become a police chief, you need to be able to answer questions about your experience, management style, and vision for the future of policing.

Are you familiar with the area you’re applying to lead a police department in?

This question is a great way to see how much research you’ve done on the community. It also shows your willingness to get involved in the community and learn about it. When answering this question, make sure to mention any organizations or groups that you are familiar with in the area.

Example: “I am very familiar with the city of Springfield because I grew up here. I have been active in the community for many years as a volunteer at the local animal shelter. I know there are some issues within the police department regarding communication between officers and the public. I would love to help bridge that gap by getting out into the community more often.”

What are some of the most important qualities a police chief should have?

This question is your opportunity to show the board that you have what it takes to be a police chief. You can answer this question by listing some of the qualities you possess and why they are important for a police chief.

Example: “I believe one of the most important qualities a police chief should have is integrity. As a leader, I would expect my officers to follow the law themselves, so I would need to lead by example. Another quality I think is essential is communication skills. A police chief needs to be able to communicate clearly with all members of their department, as well as the public. Finally, I think empathy is an important quality in a police chief because they will often be dealing with people who are experiencing difficult situations.”

How would you deal with a situation in which there is disagreement among your officers about how to handle a case?

Police officers often have to make decisions about how to handle a case, and sometimes those decisions can be controversial. The interviewer wants to know that you are able to lead your team through these situations in a way that maintains morale and ensures the safety of the community.

Example: “I would first listen to all sides of the disagreement and then decide which approach I thought was best. If I agreed with my officers’ different approaches, I would explain why I think each is appropriate and ask them to try out their respective strategies for a period of time. This allows me to see if one strategy is more effective than the other while also allowing my officers to feel like they had some input into the decision.”

What is your process for evaluating your officers’ performance?

The interviewer may ask this question to learn more about your leadership style and how you use it to evaluate the performance of others. Your answer should include a specific example of how you have done this in the past, as well as what factors you consider when evaluating an officer’s performance.

Example: “I believe that effective evaluation is one of the most important parts of being a police chief because it allows me to provide constructive feedback to my officers while also helping them improve their skills. In my last position, I met with each officer twice per year to discuss their strengths and weaknesses. During these meetings, I asked questions like, ‘What are some things you would like to work on?’ or ‘How can we make your job easier?’ These conversations helped me understand my officers better and allowed us to build stronger relationships.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to use your leadership skills to resolve a conflict.

Police chiefs are responsible for managing their departments and ensuring that officers have the resources they need to do their jobs. A hiring manager may ask this question to learn more about your leadership style and how you resolve conflicts in the workplace. If you had the opportunity to change one thing about your department, what would it be?

This question is an opportunity to show your leadership skills and willingness to make changes. When answering this question, it can be helpful to think about what you would change in the department that would benefit officers or improve their work environment.

Example: “If I had the opportunity to change one thing about my department, I would implement a more efficient system for tracking crime reports. Currently, we use a paper-based system where officers have to fill out multiple forms when responding to calls. This leads to mistakes and delays in reporting important information. If I were given the chance to change this process, I would implement a digital system that allows officers to report incidents from their phones while on duty.”

What would you do if you discovered that some of your officers were engaging in illegal activities?

Police officers are often in positions of power, which can make them vulnerable to corruption. As a police chief, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your officers uphold the law and act ethically at all times. When answering this question, you should explain how you would handle such an incident if it occurred during your tenure as police chief.

Example: “If I discovered that some of my officers were engaging in illegal activities, I would immediately launch an internal investigation into the matter. If the allegations turned out to be true, I would fire those officers and report the incident to the state attorney general so they could pursue criminal charges against the officers involved.”

How well do you understand the laws that govern law enforcement?

The interviewer may ask this question to assess your knowledge of the laws that govern law enforcement. This can be an important skill for a police chief, as you will need to understand and enforce these laws. In your answer, try to show how much you know about these laws and highlight any specific ones that are relevant to your experience.

When making decisions about public safety, how do you determine what the community’s needs are?

Police departments are often looking for ways to improve community relations. This question is your opportunity to show the hiring board that you have a plan in place to help build trust and encourage positive interactions between police officers and members of the public.

Example: “I believe that one of the best ways to promote engagement and build trust with our community is through transparency. I would make sure all departmental policies, procedures and training materials were available online so anyone could access them. In addition, I would hold regular town hall meetings where citizens can ask questions about current operations and provide feedback on how we can improve.”

Describe your process for making decisions.

This question can help interviewers understand how you make decisions and what factors influence your choices. Your answer should include a specific example of a time when you made a decision that benefited the department or community.

Example: “When making important decisions, I first consider all available information about the situation at hand. Then, I discuss my thoughts with other members of the team to get their input on the matter. After considering everyone’s opinions, I decide which course of action is best for the department or community based on our goals and values. In my last position as police chief, I had to make several difficult decisions regarding budget cuts. We decided to eliminate some positions in favor of hiring more officers.”

What makes you the best candidate for this position?

This question is your opportunity to show the interviewer why you are the best candidate for this position. You can highlight your experience, education and skills that make you a good fit for the role.

Example: “I am the most qualified candidate because of my extensive law enforcement background. I have worked in various roles within the police department since graduating from college with a degree in criminal justice. My diverse skill set makes me an excellent problem solver who can lead a team of officers to find solutions to challenges they face on the job. I also understand how important it is to work well with others, which is why I strive to be a collaborative leader.”

Which leadership style do you prefer?

Police chiefs need to be able to lead their departments effectively. Employers ask this question to learn more about your leadership style and how you would approach leading a police department. Before your interview, think about which leadership style you prefer and why. Explain that you are aware of the different styles and can adapt to each one as needed.

Example: “I believe in being an empathetic leader who is also decisive. I want my officers to feel comfortable coming to me with any concerns or ideas they have. At the same time, I am committed to making decisions based on facts rather than emotions. In my last role, I was promoted to police chief after the previous chief retired. My first order of business was to meet with all of the officers to introduce myself and hear their thoughts and concerns.”

What do you think are the most important qualities that a police chief should possess?

Example: “I believe that communication and problem-solving skills are two of the most important qualities a police chief can have. As a leader, it’s my responsibility to make sure that all members of the department understand their roles and responsibilities. I also need to be able to solve problems quickly and effectively so that we can continue to provide excellent service to our community.”

How often do you think police officers should receive performance evaluations?

Police officers are often in situations where they must make quick decisions. It’s important that police departments have a system in place to ensure their officers receive regular feedback and evaluations so they can improve their performance. When answering this question, it can be beneficial to mention the importance of receiving regular feedback from your superiors and how you would implement such a program if hired as a police chief.

Example: “I think it is very important for police officers to receive regular feedback on their performance. I believe every six months is an appropriate amount of time between evaluations because it gives supervisors enough time to provide constructive criticism while also allowing them to see improvements made by their officers.”

There is a new law that directly impacts how your department operates. How would you adjust your policies and procedures to comply with the law?

This question is an opportunity to show your leadership skills and ability to adapt. It also allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of current laws and how they affect police departments. When answering this question, it can be helpful to mention a specific law that has recently been passed or changed.

Example: “In my last position as chief of police, we had to adjust our policies when the state legislature passed a new law regarding use of force by officers. The law stated that any officer who used excessive force would be charged with a misdemeanor. We met with all of our officers to discuss the changes in the law and explain why these changes were being made. I believe transparency is important for maintaining good relationships between the department and the community.”
