Product Manager Cover Letter Writing Tips

Show your knowledge

As a product manager, you’ll need to be able to think strategically about the future and anticipate what consumers will want. To demonstrate your ability to do this in your cover letter, list some of the strategies you used when working on past projects.

For example: “I increased sales by 100% through an integrated marketing strategy of ____ which included targeted promotions, social media advertising, and public relations campaigns.”

Highlight your leadership and teamwork skills

As a product manager, you know that it’s your job to balance the needs of different stakeholders and represent the best interests of the company. To woo potential employers, show off your ability to bring people together by selling yourself as someone who can effectively address these competing priorities.

Include highlights from your resume such as how you’ve successfully collaborated with design teams, marketing executives, and legal teams to navigate difficult decisions.

Tailor your cover letter to the company

Product managers need to be able to quickly determine the needs of a company and then convey their own skills and abilities as solutions.

Doing your homework demonstrates that you’re detail-oriented, have initiative, and are serious about the product management profession. Furthermore, when you tailor your resume or cover letter to each potential employer, it increases your chances of being contacted for an interview.

Proofread your cover letter

Product managers must be able to quickly spot errors in their work. As such, they must take the time to carefully proofread their cover letters before submission.

Have someone else proofread your work if you can’t do it yourself. Be sure to check for spelling and grammatical errors throughout your cover letter, as well as in the job title and contact information section at the top of your letter. If you’re unsure of anything in your cover letter, don’t hesitate to ask someone for help or clarification before submitting it.
