If you’re interested in becoming a prosthetist, you will need to complete an accredited prosthetics program. After you’ve completed your education and training, you will need to pass a state-administered exam to become licensed. Once you’re licensed, you can start applying for jobs.

Are you comfortable working with patients who have physical disabilities?

I always made sure to treat each patient with respect and compassion, and I would do the same in this position.”

What are some of the most important qualities that you think a prosthetist should have?

How would you explain the function of a prosthetic limb to a patient who is unfamiliar with the concept?

These joints allow for movement and flexibility. There are also foot and hand pieces that attach to the pylon.”

What is your process for taking a patient’s measurements and determining the appropriate prosthetic device for them?

This question can help the interviewer understand your process for working with patients and how you use your skills to create a positive experience. Use examples from previous experiences to highlight your ability to work with people, communicate effectively and solve problems.

Example: “I start by asking my patient what they are looking for in their prosthetic device. I then take measurements of their limb or limbs that need a prosthetic device. From there, I determine which type of prosthetic device is best suited for them based on their needs and preferences. For example, if they want a prosthetic leg that allows them to run, I would recommend a carbon-fiber running blade. If they want something more discreet, like an ankle foot orthosis, I would make sure it fits properly and looks aesthetically pleasing.”

Provide an example of a time when you had to help a patient who was unhappy with the fit or appearance of their prosthetic device.

Example: “I would first ask them what they find challenging about using the prosthetic limb. I would then try to identify if there is a specific issue that we could work on together. If they have issues with balance, I may recommend exercises that can improve their stability.”

What would you do if a patient complained of pain or discomfort after using their prosthetic limb for the first time?

Prosthetists often work with patients who have never used a prosthetic limb before, so employers ask this question to make sure you know how to handle these situations. In your answer, explain that you would try to understand the patient’s concerns and address them as best you can. What makes you the best candidate for this position?

Which prosthetic devices do you have the most experience working with?

It also helps them understand which devices you’re most comfortable working with, which may be those they use in their facility. When answering this question, it can be helpful to list the prosthetic devices you have worked with the longest or that you are most familiar with.

Example: “I’ve worked with both myoelectric arms and legs for many years now. I find these devices to be very effective for patients who need a more advanced device than a traditional prosthesis. I’m also quite experienced with cosmetic prostheses, as I often work with burn victims who require new limbs.”

What do you think is the most challenging part of being a prosthetist?

Prosthetists often work long hours, so it’s important that you’re comfortable with this type of schedule. There is a recall on a type of prosthetic limb that a patient currently uses. What is your process for informing them of the recall and switching them to a new prosthetic?

An interviewer may ask this question to understand how you handle situations that require a high level of customer service. In your answer, demonstrate your ability to communicate with patients and provide them with the information they need in an empathetic way.

Example: “If there is a recall on a type of prosthetic limb I have previously made for a patient, I first make sure to speak with them about it. If they are currently using the prosthetic, I will offer to replace it at no cost. If they are not currently using the prosthetic, I will explain the situation and offer to switch them over to the new one.”
