For example, the physical layer defines standards for cabling and connectors while the data link layer establishes rules for sending packets of information.”

What are the different types of fiber optic cables and when would you use them?

This question is a great way to test your knowledge of fiber optic cables and how they’re used in telecommunications. When answering this question, it can be helpful to list the different types of fiber optic cables and what their uses are.

Example: “There are two main types of fiber optic cables—single-mode and multimode. Single-mode fiber optic cables have a smaller core than multimode fiber optic cables, which means that light travels through them more efficiently. This makes single-mode fiber optic cables ideal for long-distance communication because there’s less signal loss. Multimode fiber optic cables are better suited for short-distance communication because they allow for faster data transfer.”

How would you troubleshoot a problem with a VoIP system?

What is the difference between a LAN and a WAN?

If you were asked to design a new telecommunications system for a business, what steps would you take?

This question can help the interviewer understand how you approach a project and what steps you take to complete it. Use your answer to highlight your problem-solving skills, communication skills and ability to work with others.

Example: “I would first meet with the business owner or manager to learn more about their current telecommunications system and what they want from the new one. What would you do if you noticed that a radio tower was emitting too much static?

Example: “I perform regular maintenance on my systems by updating software and checking for updates at least once per week. I also check for system errors daily and run diagnostics twice per month. I find that this helps me identify issues before they become major problems.”

There is a problem with a radio tower and it needs to be fixed immediately. What would you do?

This question is a great way to test your problem-solving skills. It also shows the interviewer that you are able to prioritize tasks and complete them in a timely manner. In your answer, explain how you would assess the situation and determine what needs to be done first.

Example: “If there was an issue with a radio tower, I would immediately call my supervisor for advice on how to proceed.
