What Grade Is Age 14? How Birthday Cutoffs Matter

A 14-year-old in the United States is typically in 9th grade, which is the first year of high school (also called freshman year). Some 14-year-olds are still in 8th grade, depending on when their birthday falls relative to their state’s enrollment cutoff date.

How Birthday Cutoffs Affect Grade Placement

The grade a 14-year-old is in depends on when they were born during the calendar year and the kindergarten cutoff date in their state. These cutoff dates determine which kids start school together, and that grouping carries through every grade afterward.

Most states set the cutoff at September 1, meaning a child must turn five by that date to start kindergarten that fall. If your child was born before the cutoff, they entered kindergarten a year earlier than a child born just after it, placing them a full grade ahead. By the time both kids are 14, one could be in 9th grade while the other is in 8th.

Cutoff dates vary across the country. Some states use dates as early as July 31, while others extend as late as January 1 of the following year. A few states leave the decision to local school districts entirely. This means two 14-year-olds born on the same day but living in different states could be in different grades.

What 9th Grade Looks Like

Ninth grade is the start of high school for most American students. The typical age range in a 9th-grade classroom is 14 to 15. Students in this year usually take introductory courses in core subjects like algebra or geometry, English, biology, and world history. This is also the first year that grades begin counting toward a student’s high school GPA and transcript, which colleges will eventually review.

Students who turn 14 later in the school year, particularly those born in the spring or summer, may still be in 8th grade (the final year of middle school) when they hit that birthday. They’ll move into 9th grade the following fall.

When a 14-Year-Old Might Be in a Different Grade

Not every 14-year-old follows the standard track. A child who was held back a year (sometimes called “redshirting” in kindergarten or retention in a later grade) might be in 7th or 8th grade at 14. Conversely, a student who skipped a grade due to advanced academic ability could be in 10th grade. These situations are less common but not unusual.

Homeschooled students and those in alternative programs may not use traditional grade labels at all, instead progressing through material at their own pace regardless of age.

Grade Equivalents in Other Countries

If you’re comparing across borders, a 14-year-old’s grade level lines up roughly but not identically in other English-speaking countries. In Canada, 14-year-olds are also generally in Grade 9. In Australia, the equivalent is Year 9. In the United Kingdom, 14-year-olds are typically in Year 10, which is when students begin their GCSE coursework (the standardized exams taken at age 16). The UK system numbers years differently, so Year 10 there corresponds to the same age group as 9th grade in the U.S.
