What a Quality Auditor Does Day to Day

At its core, the job is about verification. Quality auditors examine whether a company’s products or processes align with internal specifications, industry standards, or government regulations. That can mean physically inspecting items on a production line, reviewing batch records in a lab, or evaluating whether a claims department followed its own procedures when processing customer files.

Beyond inspection, quality auditors develop and refine the testing methods used to evaluate products. They design parameters for what “acceptable” looks like, then measure real output against those benchmarks. When something falls short, they investigate the root cause, document the discrepancy, and recommend corrective actions to prevent it from happening again.

Quality auditors also conduct formal audits, which are structured reviews of an entire system or process rather than a single product. These audits follow a defined scope and checklist, produce a written report, and typically result in findings that the company must address within a set timeframe. Many quality auditors schedule and manage these audit cycles for their organizations, coordinating across departments to minimize disruption while keeping the review process on track.

Senior quality auditors often supervise teams, delegate inspection duties, and serve as the point of contact when external auditors (from regulators or certification bodies) visit. The role sits within a company’s broader quality control function, but auditors typically carry more authority and independence than entry-level inspectors.

Industries That Rely on Quality Auditors

Quality auditors are found in manufacturing, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive, food and beverage, insurance, software, and construction, among other fields. The specifics of the job shift depending on the industry, but the underlying skill set stays consistent: attention to detail, familiarity with standards, strong documentation habits, and the ability to communicate findings clearly.

In heavily regulated industries like pharmaceuticals, the stakes and requirements are significantly higher. The FDA requires pharmaceutical manufacturers to maintain independent quality units responsible for approving or rejecting incoming materials, in-process materials, and finished drug products. These quality professionals review production records, investigate unexplained discrepancies, and approve all procedures related to facilities and equipment. FDA regulations also require that quality unit personnel be selected based on their scientific and technical understanding, product knowledge, and risk assessment abilities. The quality unit must remain independent from the manufacturing and product development teams to avoid conflicts of interest.

In less regulated industries, quality auditors may focus more on internal efficiency and customer satisfaction than on government compliance. A quality auditor at a consumer goods manufacturer, for example, might spend most of their time reducing defect rates and streamlining inspection processes to cut costs without sacrificing product reliability.

Skills and Qualifications

Most quality auditor positions require at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as engineering, manufacturing technology, quality management, or a science discipline. Some employers accept candidates with associate degrees or trade school diplomas paired with additional work experience. Strong analytical skills, proficiency with data collection tools, and the ability to read and interpret technical specifications are baseline expectations.

Communication matters more than many people expect in this role. Quality auditors write detailed reports, present findings to management, and sometimes deliver uncomfortable news about noncompliance to department heads. The ability to explain a technical problem in clear, practical terms is what separates effective auditors from those whose reports sit unread.

Familiarity with quality management frameworks is important. ISO 9001 (the international standard for quality management systems) comes up in nearly every quality auditor job listing. Depending on the industry, you may also need to understand ISO 13485 (medical devices), AS9100 (aerospace), IATF 16949 (automotive), or current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations for pharmaceuticals and food.

The ASQ Certified Quality Auditor Credential

The most widely recognized certification for this career is the Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) credential from the American Society for Quality (ASQ). It is not legally required to work as a quality auditor, but many employers prefer or require it, and it signals a verified level of competence to clients and regulators.

Eligibility requirements are substantial. You need eight years of on-the-job experience in areas covered by the CQA Body of Knowledge, with at least three of those years in a decision-making position. ASQ defines “decision-making” as having the authority to define, execute, or control projects or processes and be responsible for the outcome. That does not necessarily mean a management title, but it does mean meaningful responsibility.

Higher education can offset some of the experience requirement. A bachelor’s degree waives four years, a master’s or doctorate waives five, an associate degree waives two, and a technical or trade school diploma waives one. So a candidate with a bachelor’s degree would need four years of qualifying experience (with three in a decision-making role) rather than eight.

The certification exam covers auditing fundamentals, audit process management, auditor competencies, audit reporting, corrective and preventive action, and quality tools and techniques. Passing the exam demonstrates that you can plan, execute, and report on audits according to recognized professional standards.

Salary Expectations

Pay for quality auditors varies by industry, experience, and geographic location. As a reference point, Salary.com reports that a mid-level claims quality auditor (with roughly two to four years of experience) earns an average of about $58,700 per year as of early 2026. Entry-level positions in that niche start around $49,000, while the majority of mid-level auditors fall between $53,600 and $63,900.

Experience pushes earnings higher. Senior auditors with four to seven years typically earn around $66,000, while supervisors and managers with seven or more years can reach $80,000 to $100,000 or more. These figures reflect one segment of the field. Quality auditors in pharmaceuticals, aerospace, or medical devices often command higher salaries due to the specialized regulatory knowledge required. Auditors who hold the CQA credential also tend to earn more than their non-certified peers, as the certification signals a level of expertise that employers value during hiring and promotion decisions.

How to Enter the Field

Most quality auditors don’t start as auditors. The typical path begins in a quality control or quality assurance role, such as a quality inspector, quality technician, or QA analyst. These entry-level positions build the foundational skills (inspection techniques, documentation practices, familiarity with standards) that auditing requires.

From there, gaining experience with audit processes, either by assisting on internal audits or participating in supplier audits, is the clearest route to an auditor role. Many organizations train promising QA staff to become internal auditors before promoting them or encouraging them to pursue formal certification.

If you are coming from outside the quality field entirely, a degree in engineering, industrial technology, or a related discipline gives you the strongest starting position. Pairing that with an entry-level quality role and working toward the CQA credential over several years is a well-established career trajectory that employers recognize and reward.
