When School Starts in the U.S.

Southern states tend to start earliest. Schools in parts of the South send students back as early as the first week of August, with the majority returning between August 7 and August 18. The fall semester is by far the largest, and when people refer to “starting college,” they usually mean August or September.

Across most of Europe and Canada, the school year also begins in late August or September, aligning with the Northern Hemisphere’s transition from summer to fall. The pattern is consistent: a long break over summer, then a fresh start as autumn arrives.
The Southern Hemisphere flips the calendar. In Australia, the school year runs from late January through December, split into four terms. Term 1 starts at the end of January or early February, which is the middle of the Australian summer. Exact dates vary from state to state. Other Southern Hemisphere countries follow a similar January or February start, since their seasons are reversed from the Northern Hemisphere.
Japan Starts School in Spring
Japan is a notable exception to both patterns. The Japanese school year begins in April, timed to coincide with spring and the blooming of cherry blossoms. The cultural logic is that spring, when life begins anew, is the ideal time to start new things. Early April is when cherry trees on school grounds are in full bloom, making it a traditional backdrop for first-day-of-school photos. Japan’s fiscal year for government and business also starts in April, so the entire country resets on a spring schedule rather than a fall one.
Why Start Dates Vary So Much
The differences come down to climate, culture, and local policy. In the U.S., the spread between late July and mid-September reflects decisions made at the state and district level. Some states have laws that prevent schools from starting before a certain date, often to protect the summer tourism economy. Other districts prefer an early start so they can finish the first semester before winter break, giving students a cleaner academic calendar.
Globally, the pattern is simpler: most countries start their school year at the end of their longest break, which usually falls during the warmest months. In the Northern Hemisphere, that means a late-summer or early-fall start. In the Southern Hemisphere, it means late January or February. And in Japan, tradition and culture place it squarely in April.
