How to Write an Applied Mathematician Resume

Here’s how to write an applied mathematician resume of your own.

Write Compelling Bullet Points

Bullet points are the most effective way to showcase your experience and qualifications. But rather than simply listing your responsibilities, you can make your bullet points much more interesting and compelling by using them to tell a story about your work.

For example, rather than saying you “developed new algorithms for data analysis,” you could say you “developed new algorithms for data analysis to reduce processing time from 24 hours to 2 minutes, resulting in a 200% increase in productivity.”

The second bullet point is much more interesting and provides a clear sense of the outcome of the work. It also provides a specific number to quantify the impact of the work—a must-have for any bullet point in your resume!

Identify and Include Relevant Keywords

When you submit your resume online, it’s likely that it will be scanned by an applicant tracking system (ATS) for certain keywords. This program will search for terms related to the job opening, like “mathematical modeling” or “statistics” in order to determine whether your skills are a match. If your resume doesn’t include enough relevant keywords, the ATS might automatically reject your application.

To increase your chances of getting an interview, use this list of common applied mathematician keywords as a starting point and add them throughout your resume:

  • MATLAB
  • Python (Programming Language)
  • Mathematics
  • C++
  • LaTeX
  • C (Programming Language)
  • R (Programming Language)
  • Machine Learning
  • Algorithms
  • Statistics
  • Simulations
  • SQL
  • Computational Mathematics
  • Deep Learning
  • Engineering
  • C#
  • Data Analysis
  • Unix
  • Software Development
  • Linux
  • Data Visualization
  • Simulink
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Machine Learning Algorithms
  • Mathematical Modeling
  • Statistics & Probability
  • Optimization
  • Differential Equations
  • Finite Element Method (FEM)
  • Laplace Transforms

Showcase Your Technical Skills

As an applied mathematician, you are expected to be proficient in the use of mathematical software programs, such as MATLAB, R, and SAS. You should also have experience with statistical software programs, like SPSS and Stata. In addition, you should be familiar with big data concepts and platforms, like Hadoop, Hive, and Spark.
