Coursera uses several different pricing models depending on what you want to learn. You can audit many courses for free, pay monthly for a single specialization or certificate, subscribe to Coursera Plus for broad access starting at $59 per month, or enroll in a full degree program with traditional tuition. Here’s how each option works and what you actually pay.
Free Access: Auditing Courses
Many individual courses on Coursera can be audited at no cost. When you audit, you get access to video lectures, readings, and some course materials, but you won’t receive a certificate and you may lose access to graded assignments and peer-reviewed projects. This is a solid option if you’re learning for personal enrichment or testing whether a subject interests you before paying. Some courses also offer a preview option that lets you sample the content before committing.
Not every course supports auditing. Specializations (which bundle multiple courses together) and professional certificates generally require payment. If you see a course that’s part of a specialization, you can sometimes audit just that single course, but completing the full specialization for a certificate requires a paid subscription.
Paying Per Specialization or Certificate
If you want a credential from a specific program, Coursera charges a monthly subscription that stays active until you finish. Professional certificate programs start at $49 per month, while specializations typically fall in a similar range. You get a 7-day free trial before your first charge.
The key thing to understand is that this is a recurring monthly fee, not a one-time payment. If a professional certificate takes you four months to complete at $49 per month, you’ll pay $196 total. If you finish in two months, you pay $98. This means your total cost depends entirely on how fast you work through the material. Canceling your subscription stops future charges but also cuts off your access to graded content.
This per-program subscription makes sense if you only need one specific credential. But if you plan to take multiple specializations or certificates, Coursera Plus is almost certainly a better deal.
Coursera Plus: The All-Access Subscription
Coursera Plus gives you unlimited access to the majority of courses, specializations, and professional certificates on the platform for a flat fee. There are two payment options:
- Monthly: $59 per month
- Annual: $399 per year (equivalent to about $33 per month)
The annual plan saves you roughly $309 compared to paying monthly for a full year, so it’s the better value if you know you’ll use the platform consistently. With either plan, you can enroll in as many included courses as you want simultaneously and earn certificates for each one you complete.
There are exclusions. Coursera Plus does not cover degree programs, MasterTrack certificate programs, or certain specializations and professional certificates. Before subscribing, check whether the specific programs you want are included by looking for the “Included with Coursera Plus” label on the course page.
The math on Coursera Plus is straightforward. If you plan to complete two or more specializations in a year, the annual plan at $399 will almost certainly cost less than subscribing to each one individually. If you only need a single certificate, the per-program subscription is cheaper.
Financial Aid for Certificates
If you can’t afford the subscription cost, Coursera offers financial aid that covers the cost of earning a certificate. You apply directly from the course home page by filling out a short application describing your educational background, career goals, and financial circumstances. The application has a 150-word minimum and takes up to 16 days to be reviewed.
If approved, you get full access to course content, graded assignments, and a certificate upon completion. You’ll have 180 days to finish the course. One important catch: if you start a free trial for a subscription while your financial aid application is pending, the application gets canceled automatically. So choose one path or the other.
Degree Programs
Coursera also hosts accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs from universities. These are priced like traditional online degrees, not like the monthly subscriptions described above. Tuition varies by university and program, but Coursera promotes a collection of degree programs with total tuition under $20,000. Some programs cost significantly less, while others run higher depending on the institution.
You apply and enroll through the university, pay tuition on the university’s schedule (often per credit or per semester), and earn a degree from that institution. Coursera Plus does not cover any portion of degree tuition.
Business and Team Plans
Coursera offers separate plans for organizations that want to provide employee access to the platform. The Team plan covers up to 125 users at $399 per user per year. For organizations with more than 125 users, Coursera offers an Enterprise plan with custom pricing that requires contacting their sales team.
Both business plans include access to a curated library of courses, specializations, and certificates, along with admin features like progress tracking and skill analytics. If your employer already has a Coursera for Business account, check with your HR or learning and development team before paying out of pocket.
Choosing the Right Option
Your best pricing path depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. If you just want to learn a topic without needing proof of completion, auditing individual courses costs nothing. If you need one specific certificate for a job application or promotion, the per-program monthly subscription keeps costs low as long as you finish quickly. If you’re planning to build skills across multiple areas over the coming year, the annual Coursera Plus plan at $399 offers the broadest access for a predictable price. And if you want a full degree, expect to budget for traditional university tuition, even though you’ll take the classes through Coursera’s platform.
