Cash App gives you a routing number and account number, just like a traditional bank. You provide those numbers to your employer’s payroll department (or any other payer), and your paycheck lands directly in your Cash App balance. The process takes a few minutes to set up, and deposits can arrive up to two days earlier than with many traditional banks.
How to Find Your Account Details
Cash App assigns you a unique routing number and account number that function the same way a checking account’s numbers do. To find them, tap the Money tab on your Cash App home screen, scroll down, and tap “Direct deposit.” Your routing and account numbers will appear on that screen.
These are the two numbers you’ll hand over to whoever is sending you money. Your employer’s payroll system, a government benefits portal, or a tax filing form will each have fields for a routing number (which identifies Cash App as the financial institution) and an account number (which identifies your specific account). Copy them carefully, since a single wrong digit can send your money to the wrong place or cause the deposit to bounce back.
Setting It Up With Your Employer
Once you have your routing and account numbers, give them to your employer’s payroll or HR department. Most companies have a direct deposit enrollment form, either on paper or through an online payroll portal. You’ll enter the routing number, account number, and select “checking” as the account type.
Some employers let you split your paycheck between multiple accounts. If you want part of your pay in Cash App and part in a traditional bank, you can usually specify a dollar amount or percentage for each. After you submit the form, it typically takes one to two pay cycles for the switch to go into effect. Your employer may send a small test deposit first to verify the account works.
When Your Money Arrives
Cash App makes direct deposits available as soon as they’re received, which can be up to two days earlier than many banks. Traditional banks often hold incoming funds until the official payment date, but Cash App releases them right away once the deposit file comes through. So if your employer sends payroll data on a Wednesday for a Friday payday, you might see the money on Wednesday or Thursday instead.
That said, the timing depends entirely on when your employer (or other payer) actually submits the deposit. If they send it late or only on the payment date itself, there’s no early window to work with. Once the deposit is sent, funds are typically available within one to three business days.
Receiving Tax Refunds and Government Payments
You can use your Cash App routing and account numbers to receive a federal tax refund. When filing your return, enter the numbers in the direct deposit section and select “checking” as the account type. The IRS allows direct deposit to mobile apps as long as the app provides valid routing and account numbers.
A few rules to keep in mind. The IRS requires that the refund go into an account in your name (or your spouse’s name for a joint return). No more than three electronic refunds can be deposited into a single account in a given year. If you exceed that limit, the IRS will mail you a paper check instead. Double-check your numbers before submitting your return: if the deposit is rejected because of incorrect information, the IRS will eventually send a paper check to your address on file, but that process can add weeks to your wait.
Government benefits like Social Security or unemployment payments work the same way. Provide the routing and account numbers on the relevant enrollment form, and the deposits will flow into your Cash App balance.
What to Do if a Deposit Is Missing
If your expected deposit hasn’t shown up, start with your employer. Contact your payroll department to confirm they submitted the deposit accurately and on time. Payroll errors, like a transposed digit in your account number, are one of the most common reasons deposits go astray.
If your employer confirms the deposit was sent correctly and it still hasn’t appeared after five business days, reach out to Cash App support through the app or at cash.app/support. For tax refunds specifically, if the deposit is rejected by the financial institution and returned to the IRS, the IRS will mail a paper check. If two weeks pass after contacting your bank with no resolution, you can file Form 3911 with the IRS to initiate a trace on your refund.
How It Compares to a Bank Account
From your employer’s perspective, sending a direct deposit to Cash App is identical to sending one to any bank. The routing and account numbers work the same way in payroll systems, tax forms, and government portals. The main practical difference is on your end: once the money hits your Cash App balance, you can spend it with your Cash Card, send it to other Cash App users, transfer it to a linked bank account, or invest it within the app.
One thing to verify before you go all-in: make sure Cash App’s features cover your regular financial needs. If you write physical checks, set up automatic bill payments through ACH, or need FDIC insurance on larger balances, you may want to keep a traditional bank account alongside Cash App rather than routing everything through it.
