Progressive Snapshot is a usage-based insurance program that tracks your driving habits and adjusts your car insurance rate based on how you actually drive. You can participate through a mobile app on your phone or a small plug-in device that connects to your car’s diagnostic port. The program monitors factors like hard braking, rapid acceleration, how much you drive, and when you drive, then uses that data to calculate a personalized discount or, in some cases, a rate increase.
What Snapshot Tracks
Snapshot collects data on several specific driving behaviors. The core factors include hard brakes (sudden drops in speed), rapid accelerations, the total amount you drive, and the time of day you’re on the road. Driving late at night, for example, is considered higher risk than daytime driving, and logging fewer total miles generally works in your favor.
If you use the mobile app version, Snapshot also monitors how you use your phone while driving. That means it can detect whether you’re holding your phone, texting, or scrolling while behind the wheel. The plug-in device doesn’t track phone use, but it does give you real-time feedback: it beeps whenever you brake hard, so you know immediately when your driving score takes a hit.
Plug-In Device vs. Mobile App
The plug-in device is a small piece of hardware that connects to your car’s OBD-II port, the same diagnostic port mechanics use to read engine codes. Most cars built after 1996 have one, usually located under the dashboard near the steering column. Once plugged in, the device automatically records your driving data and transmits it to Progressive. You don’t need to open an app or remember to start a session.
The mobile app works through your smartphone’s sensors instead. It tracks the same core driving behaviors as the plug-in device, plus phone distraction in participating states. You’ll need to keep the app running or allow it to detect trips automatically, depending on your phone’s settings. Some drivers prefer the app because there’s no physical device to deal with, while others prefer the plug-in because it works passively without draining phone battery.
How Your Rate Is Affected
Snapshot can lower your premium, but it can also raise it. Progressive has stated that roughly 20% of drivers see their rates increase after using Snapshot due to poor driving habits like frequent hard braking or speeding. The remaining majority either earn a discount or see no change. The size of any discount depends on how well your tracked habits compare to Progressive’s risk models.
Your initial sign-up typically comes with a small participation discount just for enrolling. After enough driving data has been collected, Progressive calculates a more permanent rate adjustment that takes effect at your next policy renewal. If your data shows consistently smooth driving, low mileage, and minimal late-night trips, you’re positioned for the best discounts. If the data reveals risky patterns, your renewal rate could go up.
Snapshot is available in every state except California.
What Happens to Your Data
All driving data collected by Snapshot is encrypted when it’s transmitted to Progressive. If you’re using the plug-in device, data is deleted from the device itself after it’s sent to Progressive’s servers. However, Progressive retains the data on its end indefinitely.
Progressive can use your Snapshot data for more than just pricing. It may also be used to help resolve insurance claims. That includes verifying the date, time, and location of an accident, making liability determinations, investigating potential fraud, and even sharing location data with law enforcement if you report a theft. If you’re involved in a lawsuit or subrogation dispute with another insurer, your Snapshot data could be part of the evidence.
Progressive also shares personally identifiable Snapshot data with third parties in certain situations: when required by law (such as a subpoena or police investigation), to support renewal rates with a state insurance department, or with service providers who are contractually bound to keep it confidential. The company may also use de-identified data, meaning data stripped of any personally identifiable information, more broadly for research or other purposes.
Tips for Getting the Best Discount
The behaviors that matter most are the ones you can control daily. Avoiding hard braking is the single most impactful habit, since Snapshot specifically flags sudden speed changes. Leaving more following distance between you and the car ahead makes hard brakes far less frequent. Smooth, gradual acceleration also helps.
Driving less overall works in your favor, since lower mileage means fewer opportunities for risky events. If you can avoid driving during late-night hours, roughly midnight to 4 a.m., that also reduces your risk profile in Snapshot’s model. And if you’re using the app, keeping your phone untouched while driving will prevent phone-distraction penalties from dragging your score down.
Pay attention to the plug-in device’s beep if you’re using the hardware version. Each beep represents a hard brake that’s being recorded. If you notice frequent beeps during your commute, consider adjusting your route or driving style to reduce sudden stops.
