The SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing, which takes 64 minutes, and Math, which takes 70 minutes. That adds up to 2 hours and 14 minutes of total testing time, not counting the break in between. Here’s how the timing breaks down within each section and what to expect for the full test day.
Reading and Writing: 64 Minutes
The Reading and Writing section is split into two modules of 32 minutes each, with 54 total questions across both modules (27 per module). That gives you roughly 71 seconds per question. The questions cover reading comprehension, grammar, rhetoric, and vocabulary in context, and each one is tied to a short passage.
The two modules are adaptive, meaning the difficulty of Module 2 adjusts based on how you performed in Module 1. You can move freely within a module, skipping questions and returning to them, but once a module’s time runs out you cannot go back.
Math: 70 Minutes
The Math section also has two adaptive modules, each lasting 35 minutes, with 44 total questions (22 per module). That works out to about 95 seconds per question, noticeably more time per question than the Reading and Writing section. Topics include algebra, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. A built-in calculator is available through the testing app for the entire Math section.
The Break Between Sections
You get one 10-minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. There is no break between Module 1 and Module 2 within the same section. Use the break to stretch, eat a snack, or use the restroom. Once the break ends, the Math section begins.
How Long the Full Test Day Takes
While the test itself is 2 hours and 14 minutes, plan to be at the testing site for roughly three hours. If you’re taking the SAT on a weekend, test center doors open at 7:45 a.m. and close at 8 a.m. After check-in, the proctor reads instructions, and testing typically begins between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Add in the 10-minute break and you’re usually finished by late morning.
Time Per Question at a Glance
- Reading and Writing: 54 questions in 64 minutes (about 1 minute 11 seconds each)
- Math: 44 questions in 70 minutes (about 1 minute 35 seconds each)
These per-question averages are useful for pacing during practice. Some questions will take you 20 seconds, others closer to two or three minutes. The key is knowing when to move on so you don’t run out of time on easier questions at the end of a module.
Extended Time for Approved Accommodations
Students with College Board-approved accommodations receive additional time. The two most common levels work out as follows:
- 50% extended time: 96 minutes for Reading and Writing, 106 minutes for Math (3 hours and 22 minutes of testing time total, plus breaks)
- 100% extended time: 128 minutes for Reading and Writing, 140 minutes for Math (4 hours and 28 minutes of testing time total, plus breaks)
Accommodations must be requested and approved through the College Board before test day. Your school’s testing coordinator or counselor typically handles the application process.
