The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level is the most common entry point into the EMS field and serves as the foundation for all higher certifications. EMT programs focus on the fundamental skills of emergency care and require 150 to 200 hours of combined didactic instruction and hands-on skills practice; mandated hours vary by state.
The time spent in an EMT course depends heavily on the chosen program format. Accelerated, full-time programs can be completed in four to six weeks.
