How Old Are You in 4th Grade? US & UK Ages

Most 4th graders in the United States are 9 or 10 years old. A child typically enters 4th grade at age 9 and turns 10 at some point during the school year, depending on when their birthday falls.

How the Age Range Works

The 9-to-10 window comes from how kindergarten entry works. Most states require a child to turn 5 by September 1 (or a nearby date) to start kindergarten that fall. Since 4th grade is four years after kindergarten, students are generally 9 at the start of the year and 10 by the end. A child with a September birthday, for example, would turn 10 right at the beginning of the school year, while a child born in June would spend most of 4th grade as a 9-year-old before turning 10 near the end.

Why Your Child’s Age Might Differ

Not every 4th grader fits neatly into the 9-to-10 range. A few common reasons explain why some kids are a year older or younger than their classmates.

Kindergarten cutoff dates vary. While September 1 is the most common birthday cutoff for kindergarten entry, some states use dates as early as July 31 or as late as October 15. A handful of states leave the decision to individual school districts entirely. These differences mean a child who qualifies for kindergarten in one state might not qualify in another, shifting grade placement by a year.

Redshirting delays kindergarten by a year. Some parents choose to hold their child back from starting kindergarten even when the child is technically eligible. This is especially common for kids with summer birthdays who would be among the youngest in their class. Parents often cite concerns about social or academic readiness. A redshirted child in 4th grade would be 10 or 11 instead of the typical 9 or 10.

Grade skipping moves kids ahead. A child who skipped a grade due to advanced academic ability could be 8 turning 9 in 4th grade, a year younger than most classmates.

Retention holds kids back. If a child repeated a grade at some point, they would be a year older than the typical range for 4th grade.

UK Equivalent of 4th Grade

If you are comparing school systems internationally, U.S. 4th grade lines up with Year 5 in the English and Welsh system. A 9-year-old in Grade 4 in the U.S. would be in Year 4 or Year 5 in the UK, depending on birthdate. Both systems cover roughly the same age group, but the numbering is offset because the UK system counts a “Reception” year before Year 1, while the U.S. counts kindergarten as a separate stage before 1st grade.
