How to Change Your Cash App Tag: Steps & Limits

You can change your Cash App $Cashtag directly from the app, but you only get to do it twice, ever. After two changes, the tag you have is permanent, so choose carefully before confirming.

How to Change Your $Cashtag

Open the Cash App on your phone and tap your profile icon in the top-right corner of the home screen. From your profile page, tap on your current $Cashtag. You’ll see a field where you can type in a new one. Enter the tag you want, and if it’s available, confirm the change.

Your new $Cashtag takes effect immediately. Anyone who wants to send you money will need to use the updated tag going forward. There’s no cost to make the change.

The Two-Change Limit

Cash App allows a maximum of two $Cashtag changes per account. This is a lifetime cap, not an annual one. Once you’ve used both changes, there is no way to request a third through the app or through customer support.

If you’ve already changed your tag once, you have one remaining change. You can check your current $Cashtag from your profile screen, but the app won’t display a counter showing how many changes you have left. If you try to change it after hitting the limit, the app simply won’t let you proceed.

Choosing a New $Cashtag

Since your options are so limited, it’s worth spending a minute thinking about what you want. A $Cashtag has to be unique across all Cash App users, so common names and short tags may already be taken. Tags must be at least one character and can include letters, numbers, and underscores.

Pick something you’re comfortable sharing publicly. If you use Cash App for business, freelance work, or collecting payments from friends, your tag is essentially a public-facing username. Avoid anything you might find embarrassing later or that could be confused with someone else’s name.

What Happens to Your Old $Cashtag

After you switch, your previous $Cashtag is released. It won’t redirect payments to your account. If someone sends money to your old tag, there’s no guarantee it reaches you. It could go unclaimed, or another user could eventually register that same tag.

Let anyone who regularly sends you money know about the change. Update it in any payment links, invoices, or social media bios where you’ve shared your old tag.

If You Can’t Change Your $Cashtag

A few things can prevent the change from going through. The most common reason is that you’ve already used both of your allowed changes. Beyond that, the new tag you want may already be taken by another user. Try a different variation if you get an “unavailable” message.

If your account isn’t fully set up, you may also run into issues. Make sure your identity is verified and your account is in good standing. Accounts with pending verifications or restrictions may not have access to all profile editing features until those issues are resolved.
