How Long Does Your Amex Card Take to Arrive?

A new American Express card typically arrives within 7 to 10 business days after you’re approved. That’s the standard timeline for both personal and business cards. But you may not have to wait that long to start using it, and in some cases you can request faster shipping.

Standard Delivery Timeline

Once Amex approves your application, your physical card ships through standard mail and lands in your mailbox within 7 to 10 business days. That clock starts from the date of approval, not the date you applied. If your application required a manual review before approval, the total wait from application to card-in-hand could stretch a bit longer.

Business days exclude weekends and federal holidays, so if you’re approved on a Friday afternoon, your first business day is the following Monday. An approval right before a long holiday weekend can add a few extra calendar days to the wait.

Requesting Expedited Shipping

If you need your card sooner, call the number on your approval confirmation or the general Amex customer service line and ask about expedited delivery. Amex has been known to ship certain cards overnight or within a few business days on request, though availability and any associated fees can vary depending on the card product. Premium cards like the Platinum Card sometimes ship with faster delivery by default, but this isn’t guaranteed for every applicant. Calling to ask is the simplest way to find out what’s available for your specific card.

Using Your Card Before It Arrives

You don’t necessarily have to wait for the physical card to start spending. American Express offers an Instant Card Number feature that lets you use your new account right away for online purchases and digital wallet transactions.

Here’s how it works: if you’re approved and eligible, Amex will invite you to retrieve your card number immediately after approval. You can access it through the approval confirmation page online or through a link in your welcome email. This is available for nearly all personal and business cards, with a few exceptions like the Amazon Business Card and Amazon Business Prime Card.

You can add the instant number to a digital wallet on your phone, which means you can also tap to pay at physical stores that accept contactless payments. There are a couple of limitations worth knowing about. In some cases, if Amex can’t fully verify your identity right away, your instant number may only work at a select merchant until your physical card arrives. You also may not have access to your full credit line until you confirm receipt of the physical card, so large purchases might need to wait.

To get an instant number, you need to apply online (desktop or mobile) or over the phone with a customer service representative. Applications submitted through other channels may not qualify.

What to Do If Your Card Hasn’t Arrived

If 10 business days have passed since your approval and your card still hasn’t shown up, contact Amex customer service. They can confirm whether the card was shipped, verify your mailing address, and send a replacement. A wrong digit in your zip code or an outdated address on file is one of the most common reasons for delays.

When you call, have your approval confirmation or application reference number handy. If a replacement needs to be issued, you can ask about expedited shipping at the same time so you’re not waiting another full cycle. Your original card number will be canceled for security purposes once a replacement is requested, so if you’ve been using an instant card number for online purchases, expect a new number on the replacement card.

Replacement and Additional Cards

The 7 to 10 business day window also applies to replacement cards (for lost, stolen, or damaged cards) and additional cards you request for authorized users. In both cases, you can call to ask about faster shipping. For lost or stolen cards, Amex will typically prioritize getting a replacement out quickly, and expedited options are more readily available.
